Always? Even Netapp has run Sybase on the filers for some time.

Yup...you can't use a Sybase native filesystem...which is something Sybase themselves recommend.
We've been talking with our local NetApp reps about doing some evaluations of Sybase on a native filesystem versus Sybase running against an NFS filesystem just to see what the performance difference is like.
