I talked with a professional services guy who does this regularly. He said always do the disk fw first the night before or some amount of time before. This was evident by his knowledge up front that it takes 2.5 seconds per drive.
In fact, the full upgrade guide mentions it specifically: 7.2 upgrade guide, page 84
3. Verify whether you need to update disk or disk shelf firmware. Note: You should ensure that any required disk firmware and disk shelf firmware updates have completed before beginning a nondisruptive upgrade. In particular, you should upgrade disk firmware at least one day before beginning a nondisruptive Data ONTAP upgrade, because automatic background disk firmware updates can take a long time in large-capacity systems.

Did you get this as a general statement from NetApp, "you should always do the disk fw upgrades before a non-disruptive upgrade", or is this specific version/case special?

Thanks Steve (and others who responded). My update
for my 3050c went great!
The root of my problem was the disk fw update running
while performing the takeover. Note to others, do your disk fw before, it takes about 2.5 seconds per disk in my setup.
If you happen to be offlining a disk during the
takeover you'll get this:
raid.assim.tree.noRootVol:error]: No usable partner
root volume found!
