I have resolved this issue, i just disabled the adapter and reenabled it using:
storage disable adapter (adapter no) storage enable adapter (adapter no)

One of the drives in the library is directly connected to the filer however it is not showing as being available, when I run a sysconfig -t no tape drive is shown.
