We had some power problems this weekend, and being able to tell someone over the phone "just push <this> button" [0] would have been preferable to driving in to shutdown a bunch of filers. I could have halted them remotely via a serial console server, but when the power started bouncing up and down, I didn't want the filers to start back up and then come down hard again.
Hmmm... "sleep mode" on a filer... interesting thought. :-)
Well, short of offering a 'poweroff' PROM command, or a 'halt -poweroff' option to ONTAP, you might look into managed power strips, so you could halt the filers from the serial console, then telnet to the power strip and have it switch off the AC. I've never used 'em, but the prospect is intriguing... I'm sure a web search would point out some vendors to look at, unless others on the list have implemented something like this and have some feedback.
