I'm not an engineer -- just a concerned sales guy, who likes to get a little more technical than is probably good for me. :-) Sounds like you're trying to implement your F85 in a mixed-mode Win2000 domain with LDAP authentication. To my limitted understanding it seems you should be able to do this with ONTAP 6.1 and later. There are three principle documents that address this that I could find in a search on NOW:

I know the second link may seem on the surface not to apply, since you stressed that your issue is not concerning MS Active Directory. However, in Section 2 of that document it does address filer behavior on startup to join the domain in a mixed-mode environment. Excerpt follows:

For what it's worth, the Toasters discussion list is a community of individuals who share an interest in NetApp filers, and generally they are extremely helpful. However, this is not a forum that is under any obligation to support you, and you should not treat it as such. NetApp's customer support is very highly regarded, and I would suggest you raise your concerns/questions with them. If you do not achieve satisfaction through that channel, then you have a legitimate gripe.

I received very few answers ( thanks to those that respond )
I received NO answers from NetApp folks that are usually very reactives.
When we bought our F85 filer last year people at NetApp France said LDAP will be supported soon by Ontap.
THAT IS WHY we bought this filer as we are migrating ALL of our authentication process to LDAP ( NOT MS Active Directory ) for all of our workstations clients.
As many high educationnal sites we have many mixed environnement computers , HP-UX, Linux, windows9x/2000/NT, FreeBSD, Solaris ... we need to centralize authetication to LDAP to have an unique and centralized auth process for all computers.
Unfortunately Ontap for now doesn't support LDAP auth and I am stuck as our filer will centralize all users data ...
This happen BY THE FAULT of NetApp people who said Ontap WILL support LDAP auth soon ...
What am I supposed to do NOW ?????
