Is “this” in your question refers to “DFS Capability” advertisement?
DFS Referrals are used both in 7-Mode and C-Mode, that is what allows widelinks to work. Here there is no change. When you enable widelinks for a share in 7-Mode, you also enable “DFS Capability” advertisement for this share.
The apparent differences are
· until 8.2.3 it was not possible to turn off “DFS Capability” advertisement at all, you could just turn off actual symlinks processing. This is in contrast with 7-Mode where advertisement is off by default. I assume the reason is pretty simple – you need DFS to redirect client to optimal LIF, so this feature is useful even without any symlinks.
· in C-Mode it is not possible to enable symlinks processing without also enabling widelinks. Whether this is intentional I do not know.

The part of that page that explains the specific function says: "The DFS advertisement is what will allow a symlink that is a 'widelink' to work properly. This particular advertisement occurs during the time the client is making its initial connection to a CIFS share".
I'm still unclear about what changed in 7-mode to CDOT that required this.

Do you know what that controls? DFS advertisements must not have been in place in 7-mode because I have active 7-mode filers using the same Riverbed with SMB2 and no issues, but what do they do in CDOT?
Also, fun fact- if anyone is tempted to get around this by going back to SMB1, you won't be able to do virus scanning. The CDOT virus scanning system relies on SMB2 to work.

We had a similar issue- can you upgrade the RIOS version on your Riverbed? We were told that that would fix the issue.

Does that mean I cannot map the drives using dfs path or something else. Anyone has run into similar issue and what did you do to resolve it. Any help is appreciated.
