This is on both 4.0.1c and 4.0.3. Small correction to my previouspost: the "unit attention" messages showed up at the top of the hour following the addition of the spare disk (i.e., the disk was plugged in at 10:41 am, the message appeared at 11:00 am). I don't know if that is significant, but both filers showed this.
Every hour on the hour (well, as close to on the hour as possible), the filer tries to read the labels of all of the disks, just to see if any disk has gone completely out to lunch.
As for why the disk is having problems, I don't know (I don't do SCSI or disk hardware).
