Did not say it is easy. Ndmp puts a lot of markers on the tape and you must find the one where the “Unix” style dump starts. I’ve known people to restore a legato networker ndmp dump to Solaris but using restore directly and not the application…. At all

We engineer our back up archives around the fact that this is not possible. There may have been isolated successful situations, but the vast majority of the time to do a restore like this you require an original hardware equivalent environment.

It’s a major pain point for us too, and we’re actively seeking solutions to it.

Yeah, good luck with that 😉

Been there tried that.. no luck.. especially LUNs are a no-go because LUN information are stored in the folder where it is stored, and only NetApp knows how to interpret that…

But please let me know if anyone has been able to successfully restore files from NetApp NDMP to anything else than another NetApp…

So an ndmp dump from Netapp actually follows standard Unix dump except it had an extra pass at the end of the tape (pass V for ACLs)

In theory, If you could find the markers on the tape for the start of the dump, you might be able to restore to a Linux box without using ndmp

Snapdiff is new actually- not NDMP. I am experiencing a bug in gmail on ios so I can’t paste the link but the first Google result for netapp ndmp snapdiff is the blog post explaining it :)

As fas as I can remember snapdiff is using NDMP which should be a standard and open protocol, but NetApp, EMC and others have made their specific changes to their version of NDMP which basically make them not interchangeable.

So I guess you will need a NetApp controller in order to restore your data.

There is a slim chance that files can be restored to other NDMP devices (CIFS or NFS), but LUNs are required to be restored to a NDMP.

You can either just keep a NetApp controller ready for this (with no service on it) or maybe just setup an ONTAP Select virtual instance in vSphere which you will be able to restore to, and it’s not as expensive and a NetApp Hardware box.
