Yes, I should have said that VIBE isn't a supported product by Netapp so SMVI is the best option now it's been released, assuming you can deal with the limitations and cost.
With regard to SMVI - you'll also need to make sure that VMWare tools and running and are up to date. We've had a few machines that were running older versions of the tools lose network connectivity when the backup is initiated by SMVI.

Thanks everyone for your feedback, to be honest I wasn't aware VIBE, I've been using the script that appeared in one of the netapp documents last year. And although it seems to work, troubleshooting it when it goes wrong isn't that easy. At the present moment I'm trying to simplify the environment, so was looking for something that is supported by a 3rd party, so I don't have to worry about it.
It seems like SMVI will do the job and although it has some way to go, it does what it says on the tin.

Yep, that's what we've found too, and I've logged a feature request. We planned to use a pagefile datastore which was snapmirrored less frequently and not snapshotted. However, SMVI can't really handle that (unless you kludge it with independent disks) but Vibe has no problem doing so.
The problem for me is that Vibe is free and although less polished has the same, if not more functionality than SMVI.

We¹ve been running it on our production VM¹s for a couple of weeks.
It seems to do what it says on the tin. However, quite how much value it offers on top of their free Vibe product is debateable.
