I'm happy to pay the first year, but if someone @ netapp could make sure that this gets paid for going forward, that would be appreciated. I don't want to transfer someone a domain name that comes with monitory obligation.
The list isn't sponsored by NetApp, so I wouldn't expect that they'd pay for any domain registration. But ultimately, the decision about the domain name needs to be made by the list-owner, and I don't think lack of money to register a domain name is the problem... if he wanted to register a different domain name for the mailing list, he probably would have already done so, likewise, if he needed financial or technical assistance to choose an alternate domain for the list, he probably would have asked for it.
Since it seems pretty clear that the list-owner (who has been kind enough to take on the work of maintaining the list going forward) would like to keep the existing name, I think it's best to not worry about what some people might choose to infer from the domain name, and leave it at that.
