I've often wondered if it would be possible by taking all applicable volumes/aggregates offline (if there are any that touch said shelf) then disabling the storage adapter that is connected to said shelf.
I would think this would allow for a shelf swap - but the likelihood that the shelf is the only one on an adapter, and that there are no aggregates/volumes on it are pretty slim - so short downtime would be preferable to some sort of cockamamie outage like described above.
This does point out a serious detrimental aspect to the NetApp hardware that I hope is remedied sometime soon - that said, I've seen it as an issue exactly once as a customer and the failure was such that we were still operational until the next maintenance window.
Any benefit to this scenario when running shared storage with the FC Hubs (Cluster + MPIO)?

How about in a metrocluster? Same answer? -----Original Message----- From: "Bernardoff, Michael" bmichael@netapp.com To: bacardicoke@gmail.com To: rob@lazzurs.net Cc: toasters@mathworks.com

As collegues probably pointed out
For the moment shelf remove (hence swap) is NOT supported.
You may add a new shelf to an existing loop and 2 new drives in that shelf and "disk replace"-then-move-the-spares-to-the-new-shelf-and-repeat-until-the-shel f-is-empty-but-the-two-first-slots, but you will not be able to remove this bad-but-now-empty shelf without downtime.
By the way, swapping a shelf can be done quickly if well prepared (5 minutes with 4 hands).

Also this brings me to ask (I think I already know the answer) can you add a shelf to a loop without taking the storage controller down?
Yes, this is possible, as long as the shelf is supported in the already existing loop.
