You may need to go into maintenance mode first. To do this, boot your filer, and you will see on the serial console a chance to press "control-C". Do this. You will get the good ol' "Floppy Boot Menu". It is a misnomer as there is no floppy any more. It is just what it has been called historically. It has 5+ choices. You want to choose option 5 from the menu. This should be maintenance mode.
From here you can use the "disk" command to take ownership of all disks. This is one major difference between the FAS250 and the FAS270. The 250 used Hardware based ownership. (one head only, ever and one shelf). The FAS270 uses software based ownership. (You can have either one or two heads and one or more shelves).
After you take ownership of all the disks, you will need to issue the "halt" command and then a "bye" to reset the system. You will need to access the "floppy Menu" again, so do not forget to press "Control-C". This time you have a choice, you can choose option #4 to zero all disks and create a two (maybe three, I forgot) disk root volume or option #4a which creates a 3 disk Aggregate with a flexible root volume.
Hey for that matter, The menu may offer (going back to the first paragraph) you the option to "take ownership and initialize all disks". If you see that option, take it, it saves a reboot.
When the init completes, you will need to run through a basic setup. When you are done, you will need to install your licenses. When that is done, you will need to install whatever version of ONTAP you desire. Run the "download" and "reboot" commands. When it comes back, I like to run through the "setup" one more time as the first time through, you do not have all the options available since there is not "ONTAP" data on the disks yet.

If you were looking for the ability to save your data, then simply go into maintenance mode and take ownership of all disks. Also while you are there, run the hidden command "mailbox local destroy" or it might be "mailbox destroy local". I am pretty sure this has to do with hardware vs software based ownership.

Hi all,
Having just changed out our FAS250's for FAS270's, and utilised the old 250 as a shelf on the 270. I have been left with the processor and licenses for a FAS250.
The question is, if I buy a DS14Mk2 shelf full of disks, and put the processor in the new shelf, how would I get this to become a filer once again as there will be no Root volume
Does anyone know all the steps involved, or can someone point me in the right direction ?
