The FAS270 is defined as the head-shelf and not as an expansion shelf. It must only have FC-AL drives. It is possible for FAS270 to be without any FC-AL drives when connecting to DS14mk2 AT expansion disk shelves as long as it has two load boards (PN: X3247-R5).
Caution 1: Do not connect your FAS270 or FAS270c to ESH modules.
Caution 2: While both types of disk shelves can connect to the filer, if there is an existing DiskShelf14mk2 FC connected to the FAS270/FAS270c, then any additional expansion shelf must be a DiskShelf14mk2 FC. If however, you do not have an expansion shelf connected to the FAS270/FAS270c, then you can choose to connect to a loop of DiskShelf14mk2 AT or a loop of DiskShelf14mk2 FC, but not both. The FAS270/FAS270c does not support both types of disk shelves on the same loop.
Caution 3: The FAS270 and FAS270c function at a 1 Gb loop speed. Before connecting a DS14mk2 AT to your appliance, change the loop speed in the AT-FCX module because an incorrectly set loop speed results in an open loop condition. Labels within the AT-FCX module identify how to change the jumper settings. For more information see the DiskShelf14mk2 AT Hardware Guide.
Caution 4: If you decide to upgrade your system to a different platform and choose to convert the FAS270 head-shelf into an expansion shelf, you cannot replace the head modules with the AT-FCX modules.
The following table shows the expansion disk shelves and disk drives supported on the FAS270.

1 The minimum number of drives for a expansion shelf connecting to the FAS270/FAS270c is two FC-AL drives or five ATA drives. 2 Each number is a multiple of the number of disks supported and the size of the disk. It does not indicate storage size. 3 X271, X273, and X275 are 15,000 RPM drives. See technical report TR3285 for information about using these drives with other drives in the same appliance.

Hi,
I have a question regarding SATA drives in a FAS270. Is it possible to use a FAS270 with just 14x500GB SATA drives in an expansion shelf and run ontap on the sata disks? Or do I need 3 FC Disks as well for ontap?
thanks in advance, Alexander
