Sounds like bad news and good news. I can't rename it. I do have a "spare" AD I could add it to with the final name and then move it to the proper AD later. However, I worry about the permissions fallout.
I think I'll end up biting the bullet and recreating the (fifty-odd) CIFS shares. And waiting to set up peering/mirroring until after the rename. Good times.

The kb was for 7-Mode, not cDOT so does not apply. We cannot rename the cifs server name. We can change modify domain so that would work.
I did see that 7mtt had an issue when cdot was in a different domain though but if a robocopy or other host migration (PeerSync for example) then no issue. So you could have the same netbios name on a different domain then modify to the production domain after deleting the legacy system and preserve the name.

This is something I'm planning on doing soon- we have file servers that we migrated to another NAS vendor, and now it's time to migrate them to Netapp. We'll be creating the SVMs initially as the proper name with a _temp in the AD account, which we'll use to robocopy the data. Once it's time for the cutover, we'll do a final sync during the outage, and then take over the old IP address and rejoin the Netapp SVMs to the domain with the proper names (no _temp). This will require us to recreate the shares and homedir settings, and I consider myself lucky that I don't have replication or name mappings.

Also, a vserver rename command needs to have vserver peering removed prior...and prior to removing the peer you need to break all mirrors so vserver rename can be a bit of work to recreate as well when snapmirror/snapvault are in use.

Hello All,
I want to migrate the contents of a small file server to an 8.3 SVM and end up with the SVM having the same name in DNS, NetBIOS and the AD.
If this were a 7-mode vFiler I could re-run "cifs setup" and change the name to the existing name (after I'd powered down the old file server).
Can I do this in 8.3? While I can see commands for renaming an SVM that only appears to rename the SVM itself, not to do anything to the AD.
I can see how to add and remove netbios aliases (WINS entries) but again, nothing to do with the AD.
Do I have to remove and re-add the CIFS server? And lose all the CIFS shares? Or is there a way to rename the puppy?
