What's interesting is that the FC-AL card *came* in slot 8 when we got our 740 directly from NetApp. It's not like we put it in the wrong slot on purpose. We never even thought about the slot positions until we put in the gig-E cards, and then noticed the sysconfig errors.
i have to echo that. a handful of our F720s came with the FC-AL in slot 8 and a handful in slot 1. when we upgraded to 6.X last weekend i was *not* impressed to get a stream of "EMERGENCY" messages that told me to move the cards about in the middle of an already very busy quarterly outage.
Netapp support called me up and said i didn't really have to do it, but i should for performence issues.
first of all, it wasn't an emergency. so don't cry wolf.
secondly, my filer sends netapp a config every week. someone/script should have been looking for machines set up in the new incorrect fashion and my SE or netapp could have proactively mentioned this. that would have allowed scheduling.
thirdly, support told me that this was mentioned in the release notes, with a reference to "check your configuration guide". as the 720s were stock from netapp, why would i suspect a problem with card placement?
i am forced to recall HHGTG
