The filer does, more or less. If you're using NIS, it passes the request along to the NIS server. If you're using local passwd/group info, the filer checks that file and makes a decision accordingly. If you don't know, check the filer's /etc/nsswitch.conf file.
I get "Authorization Error" when logging in, unless I'm user "nobody" with no password.
You'll note, one of the default entries in the /etc/passwd file on the filer is 'nobody' with an empty password. Try logging in as 'pcuser' with no password. Now you'll have two UIDs! Woo hoo!
