It's true that this is not a supported drive, however if you upgrade to 5.1 you can use the cloned_tapes file to make the 4500 emulate a 4700. I think there ought to be a Tip on the NOW site about this, but since I can't find it, here's how to set it up:
1. Halt the filer, install the tape adapter (if necessary) 2. Attach the drive, power it up 3. Power up the filer. There will be an error message at boot telling you the tape drive is unsupported. 4. Do 'mt -f rst0a status' - this will create the file /etc/cloned_tapes 5. Edit the cloned_tapes file to map the product ID of the unsupported drive to one that is supported - eg:
DLT4500 EMULATES DLT4700
6. Do 'mt -f rst0a status' again. 7. Now 'sysconfig -t' should list the appropriate device files. 8. Note that there will still be an error message about an unsupported tape drive at boot, but it will all continue to work.

Looks like DLT 4500's are not supported, or at least not by 4.3.4 on F630's. sysconfig -t says "non-qualified tape drive," and one gets no tape devices.
Anyone had any experience to the contrary? I plan to call 888-4-NETAPP and make nice in the morning, but I wanted to find out if anyone has had other experiences, say with later revs of the OS.
I'd rather not run permanently with a non-supported library, even if NAC has a back-door patch for it. I think I need to bite the bullet and buy a real tape drive. But this 4500 (which we found in the tomb of Ramses II, believe it or not) would be a nice stopgap if that were possible.
Thanks, y'all.
