I destroyed the vol0(1) volume and the disk now shows as a spare.
I have not zero'd the disk yet but I will after I get some backups of that filer done, In hindsight I should have done them before I destroyed the volume :)

After the vol0(1) volume is destroyed, I would execute disk zero spares.

I agree 100%, but there is also a safety measure built in. "vol destroy" will only work against offline volumes. If you try to "vol destroy" the online volume, the command will puke and die with a message about the volume needing to be offline first.
From what's below, Vol0(1), the foreign volume with disk 8a.13, will be offline. It can't be brought online because it's both incomplete and foreign. Vol0, the real and active root volume, will be online. This can easily be confirmed with a "vol status" command.

Destroy the partial volume "vol0(1)" with "vol destroy vol0(1)". That will turn the disk into a spare. Obviously, be very careful when using the "vol destroy" command to make sure you get the right one. And make sure you really don't care about the data still on disk 8a.13!

We put a used disk in our filer when we had a disk failure a number of months ago instead of a new fresh disk and I dont believe the new disk got added correctly.

How can I get the replacement disk set to be a spare for vol0(root)
