No, FilerView does not require Windows.
Through 5.x FilerView is applet based. It should, as you say, work on any java-compliant browser. In practice it displays somewhat more consistently on Windows boxes (relative to *nix say) due to font mapping issues.
Starting in 6.x we've been phasing out some of the applets in favor of HTML and some Javascript.
Recent IE and Netscape versions should work ok, though, if not please let us know.
