One clarification: NFS and CIFS behave quite differently.
We commonly demo Oracle/Unix (NFS) running against a cluster and routinely do "unexpected" things to the target filer making it fail (pulling both plugs is my favorite). It seamlessly fails over to the second node and Oracle, after a hesitation for a minute or so, takes off where it left off. The giveback is equally transparent.

You are right; NT connections are not quite so robust.
