If you have only few machines, the -root option is the better choice. In large server farms with more than 256 machines that are running CDE+dtlogin (XDMCP) the -root option will not work.
You can use subnet specifications in the -root option, which might save you here.
Does anyone else get the impression that NetApp are a bit stuck in the past in the area of export specifications? The subnets are a welcome addition, but current versions of Solaris (for example) support much more. Including, incidentally, use of netgroups in -root.
