Something that might help and a lot of people don’t seem to realize is that the NetApp cables have serial number stickers near the QSFP jacks (look for a little white label) so you can tell which cables are which without having to actually trace them. The sticker should be the same on both ends (i.e. 827EF056 <–> 827EF056 – this is just a made up number, the ones you see on the cables will be different obviously). I have a couple of clients who put shelves wherever they have room so their stuff is all over the place. This little tip has saved me hours of time physically tracing cables. Less time in the spaghetti factory always makes me smile.
Another thing to keep in mind is even though you’d ideally want to number shelves sequentially, the shelf IDs don’t really matter and you can have them go like 00 – 01 – 02 – 04 – 03 if you really have to and it won’t cause problems other than if you have OCD about it.
Tmac and Francis both made a good point about the ACP timeouts, a customer of mine had recently had some problems with this because he didn’t wait long enough after resetting an IOM. Waiting 4-5 minutes before plugging the ACP cables back in made a world of difference.

You’re right about it not being pretty cabling. I’ve been in environments where part of a stack/loop is in one rack and part in another with the shelves in various orders and it always makes tracing the cabling a joy; especially without a good diagram.

Just be sure to document your cabling carefully, so someone how comes after you down the road, including yourself, to add another shelf will know that your latest DS2246 in your stack is really next-to-the-last in cabling terms. Don’t expect cabling to look pretty after you insert your shelf into the middle of the stack.
I’ve recently had ACP housekeeping complain about missing IOMs, even though cabling was all correct after the shelf addition. If disabling and reenabling ACP and cable pull/inserts don’t clear it, you might have to actually pull the IOM and reseat it. All non-disruptive operations as long as you start out from Multipath HA state.

Yes, you can absolutely hot-add the new DS2246 into your disk stack to get to the configuration you want. The only thing to be careful is to maintain at least a single path at all times. If you want details, I can send you the decabling and recabling sequence for your stack.

Is it possible to hot-add the DS2246 into the existing stack? The Installation Guide gives the process for adding it to the bottom of the stack, but doesn't explicitly prohibit inserting the shelf and it seems like you could with Multipath HA.
