We have a lot of data that users need to store on the filer, but may not need on a daily basis. I'm just trying to find, space saving measures.

What are you trying to accomplish? Backup, multiple users, online, etc.
We are both making assumptions about what the end goal is.

Yes SMB=CIFS and the Linux box solution will work in his environment, but if he doesn't have any Unix expertise, what sense does it make to add Linux into his data center? Who would admin the box? In keeping with the NetApp approach to life, simple is good. Stick with what you know -- NT. Try winzip. You could probably write some scripts to largely automate the process.

Hey Micheal, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately we don't have a Linux
box and we're running only CIFS sessions on the filer, we're an all NT shop.

You could use a Linux box to mount the filer with NFS or SMB. Create a
file
that would be used as the compressed (or encrypted) filesystem on the filer. Use a special mount program to do the compression and to mount the filesystem.
Then export the filesystem from the Linux box as NFS and/or SMB.
