Understood.
Then yes, SM would be limited in that regard. :)
One thing you could do is have a centralized server/desktop or two where people remote in and use system manager...

Justin,
I understand SM2.0 is out and have installed it on both my desktop and my laptop. What I was hoping to avoid was having to install bits on every single system we would want to be able to configure the filer from. We have 5 people on our IT team. With the new method everyone of them has to install the package on their RH desktop at work if they want to do this, and also their laptop if they have one and access from home.
One of the other issues is a couple of them use Ubuntu or Mac boxes from home. This package isn't supported for those. We'll end up having to install it somewhere else and they will have to run rdesktop or vnc to get to it. This is a lot of hassle for support compared to just pulling up a web browser from virtually any OS and running FV.

Jeff,
System Manager 2.0 is out and supported for 8.1. You can create volumes, shares, etc with it.

Andrey,
I may have to do this. It is just considerably more work to set up a centralized server somewhere, possibly needing dedicated hardware, on a limited set of supported OS platforms. The old FV would allow connections from most web browsers with the proper java plug-in. Having to do all of this adds work and complexity compared to FV. I would rather have FV as an option.
Thanks,
Jeff

Well ... DFM is free of charge today, so why not go for a central management server with RBAC?

Greetings,
I've got 8.1RC1 installed on a test filer. FilerView went away with 8.1 7-mode and we now have to use System Manager. I have 2 questions about this:
- Has anyone found a hack to make FilerView work such as copying
over files or directories from an 8.x system?
- If I only want to set up a centralized configuration that
everyone could see, would I have to set up a OnCommand Core package on a server? Right now I have to install the rpm on my linux box and a different setup on my PC. I have to tell it to go discover all of the filers for each installation. This makes supporting this a pain for our support team. Everyone has to install it on their PC and desktops in order to be able to manage the 8.1 filers. It really seems a waste to have to do so many installs, and then tell it to go find all the needed filers. I hope there is a better way :-)
I'm only looking for FilerView capabilities to create aggregates/volumes/shares, etc. I'm not needing monitoring or other advanced tools right now.
Thanks,
Jeff
