FAS3240 will run 7G. Why do you think it won't?
I was under the impression that the 3240 architecture didn't allow me to run pre-8, but I'm happy to accept that I was probably wrong there, as others have also pointed this out.
I would update to the latest 7.3.6, convert to software based disk ownership if you still are using hardware based one (this is a must with FAS3240), then swapped head and netboot 7.3.6. Reassign disks, reinstall 7.3.6 to get clean boot media and proceed with upgrading to 8.x if you prefer this version.
OK, sounds doable.
Beware LUN serial number change, can cause real troubles.
Yes, this is probably the one part that I'm least clear on having had little to do with the FC/LUN side up to now. These were all setup before I inherited the system and have just worked quietly away without any intervention from me, so there's been no opportunity to learn it until now.
But if you never did it before and this is production system and getting it wrong is really not an option ... may be calling PS is something to consider. Yes, this may look expensive, but then so is your data, is not it?
Yes, you make a good point there! I should have factored in PS up-front as the bean counters are now complaining that I'm asking for more money! The business case relies on me persuading them that I'm incompetent, which is probably going to be quite easy ;)
