Also, WINS can be evil. If you are using it, make sure both the scanner and the filer are using the same WINS servers, in the same order. If either of them are not, you could run into the very problems you are mentioning. Most likely this would be the case if in the filer's log file, it mentions the IP address of the scanner rather than the name as having problems registering.
