It's more or less "safe" if you are dealing with passive (differential)
interfaces. If dealing with active (single-ended) interface I like to be
sure that the device with the far end terminator is powered down. In any
case, all the devices in the string have to be idle when you break the
chain. SCSI controllers get most upset when they lose sight of their
terminator while a bus transaction is taking place.

Is that really safe? I was always taught never to connect or disconnect a
SCSI cable on a powered-up system due to the possibility of damaging the
SCSI controller, and I've actually seen that happen on a sparcstation once.
Do the netapps and the tape drives have some additional technology that
allows hot-swapping the scsi cable?

Igor,
You can hot swap the cable. I would sure no backup jobs are running
on the Netapp and if you are using NDMP make sure you turn it off (ndmpd
off) before swapping cables. It should work fine.
