I've updated that file in 5.3.7x and 6.2.2x and unless some version later than 6.2.2+ now incorporates a checksum, the only "integrity check" I know of is that each line in the file must be properly formed. Screw up or delete the file and your filer might get very unhappy... but since when can't you update or add a new entry?
It is said so in the na_qual_devices(5) man page. A friend and I tried editing this file multiple times to add new disks with no success. (Ontap 6.3 and later)
