It's more so tied to how much you can match your NFS rsize and wsize to the data sizes. If all you are able to do is small reads and writes, then you you are likely to have sub-optimal NFS performance.
The best practices recommends 32k for both of these settings. But you cannot control that if your file sizes are smaller than that.
