In the February '98 issue of SysAdmin magazine they do an evaluation of the Sony AIT, Exabyte Mammoth, and the Quantum DLT. They compare head life, tape capacity, cost per GB compressed/uncompressed, media load and file access times, transfer rates compressed/uncompressed, etc., and end up recommending the Sony.
I am using Quantum DLT technology and find it performs well, is reliable, and is supported on the Netapp. I'm not sure whether the Sony or Exabyte are supported yet.
