Yes...it works...They are just SCSI disks that have been screened to meet NetApps specs. (Firmware revisions etc) Used both the SS1 and SS2 strings on other devices :)

We have a mix of old Ss1s with some Ss2s on a F520 and -- in the neverending quest for more diskspace -- we may need to replace the Ss1 with something that holds more. Could a retired Ss1 be hooked up to, say, a linux box with any old SCSI adapter? Not necessarily doing RAID, just as a series of 4gb disks. Anyone recycled an old Ss1 in that fashion?
We've been told that the only upgrade path for our 520 is to ditch the 9GB drives and go with FCAL 18GB drives (can't mix and match on a 520, only on a 700-series.) I was wondering that very same thing: Can a shelf be attached to another server and look like a string of drives? Anyone? Anyone? Beuhler?
