I can't answer your query /exactly/ but I would like to let everyone know about the cyclic news file system extension to INN which was discussed at the recent USENIX LISA conference. It eliminates the thousands of small files and associated problems. Article throughput is increased by a factor of 3 to 4, and disk activity is reduced by a factor of 10.
