I thought this was supported with the a resync - you can break the mirror, use it, then resync it, all without a full sync.
Good point, I'd forgotten about that. When we were doing it, resync didn't exist yet (added in 6.1?), so it wasn't an option. But from the looks of it, that should do the trick.
