I concur. (Not that I've ever done this, we have no S3 Buckets in any ONTAP system and we won't have for the foreseeable future; we have a large on-prem StorageGRID system.) Exactly how S3 SnapMirror works (in detail), I'm not totally clear on simply because I have not read all the material there is to read.

I concur. SnapMirror/-Vault ONTAP (WAFL) <--> ONTAP (WAFL) is the way it has always worked. And SnapRestore of course. And nowadays this can also be done using the SnapDiff v3 API and SnapMirror Cloud where the latter simply means that the same SnapMirror engine inside ONTAP has an S3 endpoint (Bucket) as a target to store the data. Something else must keep track of the blocks and where they belong, since WAFL on the SnapVault target side is out of the equation in this scenario. E.g. NetApp's own CBS (Cloud Backup Service) or a 3rd party product: Cleondris, Rubrik, ... You *can* actually do backup of a whole volume (FlexVol / FlexGroup) with SnapMirror Cloud using only System Manager. But it's very crude, it doesn't have much functionality. Can't restore single files for example. To do it, you still have to purchase HCB (Hybrid Cloud Bundle) from NetApp and it's paid per TiB "physical data" which you have backed up
