Check out the NOW site for information on improving the performance of Sun GigE cards.
Are you NICs SBUS or PCI cards? My SBUS systems have less than stellar performance using SUN cards. All of my PCI bus systems use a third party card (Alteon) which is definately faster but being from a different vendor makes it hard to do a fair comparison.
