Wiping and setting up a system.

I would like to destroy all volumes on an F330 (with four shelves, fully populated with 4Gb disks), and then create a single new root volume and install 5.3.5R2 (which *does* run on an F330). I'm sure I can destroy the existing volumes (I'm good at destroying things), but it's not clear to me how to then install Ontap onto bare metal (I've only ever upgraded a filer before). Neato quickie way. Get to an OK prompt (via halt or Ctrl_C in RAM count) Enter: setenv floppy-boot? true reboot It will as if you want to floppy boot when it locates drives..enter a y or an n..if you dont..it'll just sit there forever.*** You get your 5 item menu, enter on re-init drives choice. At completion, it will walk thru a full setup session like new. Now halt filer. Enter: unsetenv floppy-boot?*** (dont forget..or reboots will sit forever if you dont catch it) reboot All done. Save you what feels like ages in booting from floppy. Pushing the limits

So we use a F760 for compiling our software....it's a demanding environment, and up until now, NetApp systems have been adequate for us As I've been refining our build process though, I've continuing optimizing it to the point the 760 may become our bottleneck. The "root"-option is more secure, but this setting has one big drawback: You cannot use netgroup names with the -root option and you can specify only 256 host names! If you have only few machines, the -root option is the better choice. In large server farms with more than 256 machines that are running CDE+dtlogin (XDMCP) the -root option will not work. Yikes! Both are very insecure choices for a solution!!! The correct answer is to simply export the home directories with root access for those machines that are running CDE that they are logging in through. Bruce

SQL Server 7 with data files on toaster?

Hi - Another request for success or horror stories; does anyone on the list have experience with running MS SQL Server 7 using a toaster to store the data (as described in http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3042.html and http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3044.html)? One possibility being looked at here is to run a database from something like a Dell PowerEdge 8450 with the data files on an F720 or F740. I'm aware of the advantages the toaster will bring in relation to backup, snapshots etc, but I'm interested in how the performance of such a setup would compare to, say, attaching a big LVD or Fibre RAID5 directly to the server. Any comments? Hello *, I think it´s a problem with the permissions on your home directory. The dtlogin process (CDE) reads and writes configuration files in the homedirectory (~/.dtlogin/..). The owner of the process is root --> But root has not permissions on mounted directories! Try out to export your homedirecties with the "anon=0"-flag in /etc/exports -or- you should open your homedirectories for everybody (chmod 777 homedir) :-(( to avoid this problem.
