Data Ontap "downgrade"

Hi All Maybe is a simple question for most of you but I've never done before and I want to be sure J I'm going to revert a 6030HA from 7.2.3 to 7.2.2 for Snapmirror (bidirectional) compliance to another 6030HA system already running 7.2.2 I've seen times ago a similar operation performed from a 7.2 to a 7.1 and I remember some special command to apply after the unzip/download phase of the preceding Data Ontap release. Is it so? I mean, there are special commands on cli or should I simply unzip the 7.2.2, living them the "download" command and a reboot as an "upgrade"? Or is there something other. My 6030HA is a NEW system, no volumes or other aggregate other that the aggr0/vol0 for the os Regards

But you don't need that to just go from 7.2.3 to 7.2.2. Simply download and reboot will do it. Davin. httpd.access -- number of entries

Hi Toaster, we currently have a problem with API access to the filers. We use options httpd.access and httpd.admin.access for enabling hosts for filer's API-control. We now use the API for several issues e.g. the save of our databases. Sadly we found out that there is a limit for these options as it is for trusted.hosts. You can only add a fixed number of entries to these options. I know that we are able to activate a whole subnet for accessing, but this is some how a security problem in my opinion. Has anyone a good idea how to deal with that situation?? Or has anybody knowledge if this restriction will be gone in future ontap releases?? Best regards and a nice weekend to the list Jochen

Snapvault and lrep_reader/writer

Hi all, Does anyone else here do SnapVault across the WAN across a long wide link (dual T3, 90+ msec delay) and get decent performance, esp for the initial copy of the volume(s) and/or qtree(s)? We've gone the route where I did an lrep_reader dump of a 3.8tb qtree (don't ask...) to local disks. Then I used a nice tool called 'bbcp' to push it all across the WAN so that I could actually *use* all my bandwidth. Regular SnapVault sucks for performance, it just can't push more than 15mb/s which stinks when you have dual T-3 (90mb/s) bandwidth. Using bbcp I can fill that pipe for days on end. So then once it's all across the WAN, I then used lrep_writer to dump the data to it's destination qtree. All fine and good, but then I have to start a regular snapvault to now catchup with all the data written during the 8+ days the first stage took. Sigh... Anyone know if I can lrep_reader/lrep_writer the next snapvault snapshot across as well, so I can push the data faster? Because each time the link goes down between the sites, I have to start all over again with the catchup snapvault transfer and it's killing me. Also, I'd love to be able to *know* how much data is left to copy from the source to the destination, but "snapvault status -l ...." doesn't give that sort of information. Or do I need to start using the 'snap delta' command and my own math to figure out things? V-series metrocluster (v3020c) on top of a 2-site EMC Clariion CX3-40 or HDS USP-VM?

Hi, We are in the process of selecting a v-series NetApp cluster, which will act as an iSCSI/NFS/CIFS NAS gateway with an EMC Clariion CX3-40 or HDS USP-VM providing the backend storage. It's residing in 2 datacenters with transparent vlan's between the two locations. The v-series will be configured as metrocluster, and will use SyncMirror on top of some dumb lun's as offered on each location by the respective CX3-40 or USP-VM of that location. There is some FUD surrounding me that this is a less than ideal situation (both stability and performance). Does anyone in the field have any experience with such a clustered HA setup? We are currently using VirtualIron which supports LiveMigrate. This requires that the LUN not change, it does not copy the storage data. Thanks however, take care. Hi, just for understanding...do you have problems with accessing the vol0 from the windows host?? If yes, then first check if you use domain-auth or local one. Reformat a netapp disk to make it a spare again?

We added two shelves of disks to a FAS960 pair and hit the raw capacity limit, so we had to pull some disks to get back under the limit. (The configuration guide is somewhat vague about the max capacity and it turned out to be less than we expected.) It has been suggested that we use some of these disks temporarily in a non-netapp system, but we will eventually want to turn them back into netapp spares. Personally I'm not keen on this idea. I am afraid that using them in a non-netapp system will scribble over labels and other data peculiar to netapp disks, making them unrecognizable as spares. Is this true? And if so, is there any way to reformat/relabel a disk to make it a netapp spare again? These are 750G SATA disks, by the way. Fabric MC and Brocade free ports usage

Hi All In a fabric MC enviroment a pair of Brocade 16 ports have been used for each site. Once filled with the needed connections to head and selve (Pool0 and Pool1) there are a lot of SFP empty with no connection. I know that other connection are not supported but I've already tried to attach a dual target HBA installed in each head and some HBA coming from hosts (Windows or Linux) and without zoning (you don't need it for MC) the Brocade I can expose all my FC LUNs created on NetApp and only to the right host using igroups with the 'authorized' WWWN. NetApp of course is in single_image cf mode. What do you think about this "unsupported" configuration? Many thanks

Can't expand SnapDrive for Windows drive

Just trying to expand a 20Gb lun used for SQL 2005 logs - Its contained within a 400Gb volume (I've allocated 140 for the database, 20 for logs and 10 for temp db). The vol is sized at well over twice the space requirements to allow for snaps. I just want to expand the log lun to 40Gb. Server is w2k3 sp1 SnapDrive 4.2.1 and OnTap 7.0.5 on a fas 270. SnapManager SQL is installed for SQL 2005. Overall SAN free space is about 80Gb. From within Windows the error SnapDrive gives is 'Unable to Expand Disk / Error there is not enough free space' Anything obvious I'm missing ? Thanks in advance, Raj.

Hi Folks - we have some admittedly underpowered 270c in a mixed cifs/nfs environment. We are seeing a random performance issue whereby cp time is increased and the resultant nfs ops it serves drops considerably, resulting in an effective outage. The question is when I look at the sysstat output collected during these periods a lot of time is spent checkpointing 'special files' - its been a while since I covered ontap theory so if someone could explain this in further detail it would be helpful. Have implemented these in an 5.5TB and 8500+ user environment. No issues whatsoever, worked like a champ, stick with Ontap 6.5 or above. Enable strict symlink option from the cifs shares command. Plan on using either 1) a *nix client to mount file the filesystem 2) a windows client that can talk *nix file protocols (SFU does not work great, try cygwin or others) 3) search NOW for "symlink tool", from NetApp's Toolbox. Very slick. It's a simple one-step process within Snapdrive and results in no downtime. Can you allocate space from one aggregate to a volume on another?

We currently have a fas 940 with the following config: 3x 144GB FC shelves all but 2 disks are in aggr1 which equates to approx 3.9TB useable space which is approx 5.7TB raw (excluding the 2 spares) containing 4 volumes 5x 72GB FC shelves with 8 assigned to aggr2 (60 spares) containing 1 volume We would like to increase the size of aggr1 and therefore plan to repalce 2 of the 72GB shelves with 144Gb, 4 of which will be retained as spares, thus giving us an extra 3.4TB of raw space to add to aggr1. Looking at the system configuration guide for the fas940 it states that the max raw aggregate size is 8TB therefore this would take aggr1 over the limit. Is it possible to create a new aggregate (aggr3) assign the new 144GB drives to it but assign the space to the volumes held on aggr1? As it stands if we were to replace 2 shelves with 144GB drives and remove 1 72GB shelf we would have a max size (based on 5x 144GB and 2x 72GB shelves) of 12TB which takes us to the max raw capacity of this filer using FC-AL drives. Widelinks look very cool, sadly the only data on this volume are LUN's. san redesign and configuration questions

Hi everyone, I have some questions for the experts regarding a SAN configuration. Configuration: FAS3020c MetroCluster (2 sites, 16km distance) 2 FC-Switches on each site, each connected via ISL's to the other location. 1 RHEL ES4 U5 Host on each site with a 4GB QLogic Dual Port HBA. Each FC-Port on each Host is connected to one of the switches FCP enabled and the cf mode is single image Snapdrive for Linux on both Hosts. Following situation: Snapdrive for Linux currently does not support DM-Multipathing on RedHat Linux. We have an open case with Netapp and they are working on the issue to support mulipathing (planned for Q1/08) When I started I setup everything for multipathing because we thought the support for it would be released earlier. I zoned the switches... Zoning: switch1 zone1: 0b(filer1)+0b(filer2)+port0(host1) switch1 zone2: 0b(filer1)+0b(filer2)+port1(host2) switch2 zone1: 0d(filer1)+0d(filer2)+port1(host1) switch2 zone2: 0d(filer1)+0d(filer2)+port0(host2) On the host I implemented DM-MP and use the mpath-Device's to access the LUN's on the cluster. Each mpath-Device consists of 4 sdx-Devices(=the 4 paths to the LUN). Example: mpath0 (360a98000433464706334455142706e33) [size=100 MB][features="1 queue_if_no_path"][hwhandler="0"] \_ round-robin 0 [enabled] \_ 3:0:1:0 sdd 8:48 [active][ready] \_ 4:0:1:0 sdf 8:80 [active][ready] \_ round-robin 0 [enabled] \_ 3:0:0:0 sdc 8:32 [active][ready] \_ 4:0:0:0 sde 8:64 [active][ready] This is working fine. The customer already installed his Oracle RAC on the LUN's/mpath-Device's which where presented to the host's. And here my problem: The customer can not wait until Q1/08 when Snapdrive for Linux supports multipathing on RHEL and I have to redesign the SAN to a single path configuration so SnapDrive is working and supported. My questions: Can I just use the sdx-Devices on the linux host's and leave the zoning and multipathing as it is? Will the cluster failover then work correctly? Or should I deactive multipathing on the hosts and just zone one hba port to one filer fc port and use that sdx-Device? I will have to implement multipathing for sure later when it is supported with linux and snapdrive so I prefer minimum or no changes to the current configuration :) Has anyone experience with such a problem/configuration? FW Generic Failure

I suspect that it is the FAS270 controller and not the ESH Module, because when changing the modules the error remains. All LED on front and back are green.

sdcli error

Hi all, When I run the following command - C:\Program Files\NetApp\SnapDrive\sdcli.exe snap mount -r mosssqlp1 -k F -s sqlsnap__mosssqlp1__recent -d Q I get the following error - Initializing...Unable to connect to the virtual disk in snapshot. Error : Not enough storage is available to complete this operation. Which is quite different from - Error description: No space left on device. Which is what I get on a full volume - so its completely understandable. The 'Error : Not enough storage is available to complete this operation' would appear to be a red-herring (ie nothing to do with storage or the SAN per se but some oddball way of Windows 2003 telling me theres some other problem. The annoying error seems to indicate a possible rpc problem in Windows rather than with SnapDrive itself. The same script on the same machine will happily mount snaps from other machines for backup purposes and I can't really pinpoint why its not mounting these snaps. If it does turn out to be an rpc issue could it be that the domain account on the server under which SnapDrive runs cannot be validated on this box ? I still haven't got my head around how sdcli talks to the SAN - if I have a backup server mounting snapshots of luns being used on other systems does it need to be able to talk to the system using the luns - why can't it deal direct with the SAN ? Yes, the FAS2050 uses software based disk assignment. Any additional disks/shelves added to the system will need to be assigned.
