autosupport stops functioning

anyone else have this happen? suddenly one of our filers stops generating autosupport messages. both autosupport.enable and autosupport.support.enable are on. if i generate a test email with the autosupport.doit option nothing happens. not even a failed message, the console just sits there as if i never generated one. needless to say neither netapp or our email server gets anything from this filer and nothing hits the console about generating any autosupport emails.

after all these years, how off-topic i can possibly get here and still hope for some help without getting flamed? ;-) is anyone out there willing to help me with a simple adaptec snapserver configuration issue? this creature has a very limited web interface and we need to set it to nfs v3 instead of the v2 default....i will gladly trade for assistance with a netapp issue if you have one....or you can have my first born (he's gotten a little expensive anyway.) reply off-list, please, or someone at mathworks is sure to hurt me. :-) ...lorib

Autosupport failing to mailhost

Hello, From what seems out of the blue, Autosupport emails are no longer able to be sent to my mailhost (Exchange 2003 on the same subnet): "Autosupport cannot connect to host rtpmail01.americas.ppdi.local (Network comm problem) for message: USER_TRIGGERED (TEST)" This message will be thrown until the message is eventually dropped. My Exchange administrator does not see any connections coming from the filer to send this email. exports issue with 7.0.4P9

Howdy all, I have the following issue: I've two filers "stuck" at ONTAP 7.0.4P9. Don't ask... they were put there before my time here, and now support 50,000 mailboxes that *never* go down.... I've inherited the following in my exports file which I cannot experiment with without risking downtime to our pool of mailhosts: /vol/vol0 -sec=sys,rw=XXX.XX.XXX.XXX/25:admin-host.domain.edu,root=XXX.XX.XXX.XXX/25:admin-host.domain.edu,nosuid /vol/vol1 -sec=sys,rw=XXX.XX.XXX.XXX/25:admin-host.domain.edu,root=XXX.XX.XXX.XXX/25:admin-host.domain.edu,nosuid Mount access is NOT granted to the admin-host in this configuration and I cannot find a reference to this issue on the NOW site. Was there issues similar to this in the exports file back in ONTAP 7.0.4 ? There seems to only be a reference to ONTAP 7.0.6 on the NOW site and at that a fair amount of "exports" issues but none specific to this issue that I found. Anybody seen this ? Any help is much appreciated. -Robert

Can I share Vmware ESX and Windows server NTFS on an iSCSI

Dear group I would like to hot-backup my machines from my ESX 3.0 server. I have No Virtual Center.. I'm thinking about having a shared vol on my NetApp. To this I would backup my hot machines through ESX snapshot backup (VCB ? ) Then from my Windows 2003 server i would connect to the VOL with software iSCSI and backup the files. I have it working with Windows seeing the vol fine and formatting it to NTFS. But then ESX can't use it. And I have it working the other way round - but then my Windows can't see VMFS files. I this possible in any way ? Thanks ! Access to filers filesystem

Dear Nabbler's I have two fas200 or rather IBM N3700 A20. I have reconfigured the B controller for a new diskshelf by removing the aggr and done a ctrl-C for a total new install. I originally did this and upgraded to IBM Ontap 7.2.1.1 - But now I can't find that on IBM.com. On the filers A controller under "software list" I can see the "7211_setup_m.exe" But I simply can not find a way to access the filers filesystem or any other way to pick that file. I need this for the B controllers installation. Can you help me ? perl script for parsing/printing CIFS audit event logs

Hi Toasters, We keep a database of the most recent logins per user per host system and we recently added netapp CIFS logins to this database. I enabled CIFS auditing of logon/logoff events but was dismayed that the resulting *.evt files are in a binary format that only Windows understands. We are pretty Unix-centric so I did some googling and found a couple of very helpful references for the Windows security event file format and wrote a perl script to parse and dump the event log files on a Unix box. Hi folks, I have a question from my customer about NFS that I can't answer. So I need some help from our NFS "gurus". Here is the question: Today we evaluate the possibility to use the NFS service for our Linux systems. Because not all the Linux server are in one room, we need enhanced security. Today we use the System-V security adjustments for the exports: /vol/proj000 -sec=sys,rw=192.0.16.0/24,root=192.0.16.97 For the Linux Systems we must use parallel to the System-V security also Kerberos. Question: Is it possible to use Kerberos and System-V on a Volume/NFS export simultaneous? Toasters: Has anyone seen this message next to your storage groups in SnapManager for Exchange? "Invalid Mixed LUN" (red exclamation in the disk icon too) This follows an asup SME failure message. Last item in /etc/messages is Thu Feb 21 04:00:38 EST [<storage_appliance>: app.log.err:error]: <Exchange_Host>: SME Version 3.2: (111) Backup: SnapManager for Exchange online backup failed. Authentication Error

Hi, I am interested in accessing /vol/vol0 from my windows machine and from Linux Machine too. When I try to connect it the following error message appeared "The account is not authorized to log in from this station". On Linux machine I can mount /vol/vol0, but it does allow me to go into mounted directory. My machine is also an administration host of NetApp. Please help. Accessing a Filer Root Volume from Windows with only NFS Licensed

Hi, we are in the process of deploying a number of Filers which will provide Storage for VMWARE. To date we have always run CIFS as our Storage has up until now served Windows client requests only. Our new Filers will be running with NFS licensed as opposed to CIFS. As I am a self confessed UNIX illiterate I will want to presist with managing these new Filers from my Windows Clients. I know that ISCSI. which will be licenced. will provide us with some CIFS features such as the ability to register the devices within AD and create CIFS shares which will be read-only. However we will still want to retain the ability to read-write the root volume and in generally manage these devices as we have done until now. I assume to achieve this I will need to install NFS Client software. Does anyone have an recommendations on such client software or any other observations that may be of use to us as we step beyond our familiar boundaries? Jimmy C.

Snapmirror problem after upgrade

I just upgraded a FAS250 from 7.0 to 7.2.4. After the upgrade in Filerview under Snapmirror, the option "Manage" is gone. All other options are there, Configure, Report, Add etc. From the command line, everything is there. The snapmirrors are working. I just do not have the option to Manage them in Filerview. filer locks on oracle DB

Hello toasters, we have a problem with some of our oracle databases (LINUX, NFS on Filers). Sometimes when the database crashes, we have locks left on the filer. Currently we use "priv set diag; lock status -f" to check for those locks. And with "priv set diag; sm_mon -l [servername]" we can delete all locks for a specific server. But this is a problem, if one server hosts more DB's than one. Is there any possibility to find out which locks are the blocking ones and delete only those? Does anyone have the same problem and has an interesting solution to that?!? Lun destroy does not free up vol free space

Toasters: Vol size is 1024GB. It had 4 vmware type luns of 240gb each taking the vol to 100% used. Now need to SIS the volumes so can't do 100% used. Lun offline/destroy 1 lun (didnt need it) and expected to see free space in volume show up. However after 2 minutes it DID go to 70%, but now back to 100% used still. No vol or aggr snapshots exist. Sis enabled still but failing due to being full. May try to turn it off to see if it will unjar the free block space. Any ideas why lun destroy wouldn't provide more free space from a df? De-dup'ing Primary Storage

To those of you that have implemented Nearstore and A-SIS on your primary storage: 1. Have you seen any difference in overall filer performance? 2. If you have LUNs, how are your space savings on those volumes? I know that enabling Nearstore does some system tweaking in the background to increase the number of concurrent backup streams that can be running, but I don't know what else it tweaks that may adversely affect performance of a primary storage system. Afterall, it was originally designed to run as a secondary storage platform.

Ditto. We are seeing ~65% savings on vmware luns....serving about 60 luns. no performance impacts during the day slight (~3%) when actually deduping. Fibre vs. copper cabling for FAS3040

We recently received a cluster of FAS3040, and due to some ordering confusion, ended up with no copper shelf interconnects but an excess of fibre cables + SFP modules. We have 4 DS14MK2 FC shelves and one DS14MK2 AT shelf to attach. I will probably obtain the copper shelf interconnects that I am supposed to have, but in the meantime, would it work good enough for testing using all optical fibre cables and no copper? Is this a supported configuration? Would it be unrecommended and how strongly? I'd have to assume it is a more costly situation than using copper interconnects. I just haven't had time to contact the right people to get this situated yet.

NDMP backup failures due to low disk space on vol?

I've got a large volume that's running low on space and a full NDMP backup has failed a couple times. Netbackup is throwing a Status code 99. it appears that about 100% of the data is backed up and it fails during some post processing phase. I can't seem to find anything obvious other than the lack of free space on the vol. Is there some clean up activity that runs post backup that could fail due to lack of free space? rsh access ports

Hi Toasters, I'm bringing up a new 3020 filer where the Admin Host (unix) is on a separate subnet. I didn't have port connectivity to the subnet past a router and had the network guy open up the access-list. Afterward, I was able to mount "vol0" but I can't do a: filer->traceroute admin-host Nor does "rsh filer version" work from the admin host, I'm getting the following on the filer's messages file: Mon Feb 11 19:24:58 GMT [rshd_0:info]: couldn't connect second port on admin-host(a)domain.com I'm thinking networks didn't open *all* ports between filer subnet and admin hosts subnet. I'm verifying with them now. I did configure ssh keys on the admin host (solaris 10) and am getting this upon ssh'ing into the filer: Mon Feb 11 19:43:16 GMT [openssh.invalid.channel.req:warning]: SSH client (SSH-2.0-Sun_SSH_1.1) from {admin-host ip supressed} sent unsupported channel request (10, env) I'm beginning my NOW research, but was hoping somebody has already seen this. We hit somewhat interesting problem with SME 4.0. After start of backup with verification on remote destination SME waits for transfer to start and after 3 minutes times out and fails verification. Verification for the second LUN on the same volume started later runs OK (including waiting for transfer to complete). I.e. getting Used space on a newly cloned filer volume

If we fetch a volume's space details (using df) on the filer immediately after some data is copied/changed on the volume then we do not get accurate results. Similarly, in cases where we fetch the volume's space details immediately after its creation from a snapshot of parent volume, we don't get valid results. It takes a long time for the "used space" to settle down to a single value depending on the amount of data. For eg : For a volume of size 10G with used space 9G, the new volume that is created takes around 13 minutes to settle down to a consistent used space value. The pattern that is usually observed is - used_space will start from a very high value then it will keep getting lesser till a point in time and after that it shoots up again. Steps to reproduce this issue: Steps to reproduce. 1. Create a empty volume of size say 10G. 2. Copy data of size 9G. (Used space is 9G). 3. Create a snapshot of this volume. 4. Create a new flexclone using this snapshot and measure space stats of the new volume repeatedly with some time lag in between. The script I had : rsh <filer> vol clone create test_to_check -b <volname> <Snapname> rsh <filer> df -k test_to_check sleep 1; rsh <filer> df -k test_to_check sleep 1; rsh <filer> df -k test_to_check sleep 1; rsh <filer> df -k test_to_check sleep 1; rsh <filer> df -k test_to_check In this case, for a parent volume of size 10G with 9G of used space, it takes around 13min for the used space to settle down for the new volume. While cloning a volume of size 310GB, i saw that used_space fluctuted from 385GB -> 310 GB before it started shooting up again. How can I find out the actual used space on this newly created volume? Deleting many large files spikes filer CPU

We have a fairly heavily loaded FAS960c pair that contains storage for our University wide email system. Most of the email storage is NFS files with the email servers running Unix and Communigate Pro. We are transitioning to MS Exchange, so these filers also have some FC SAN LUNs for our emerging Exchange service. The other day we cleaned up about a hundred NFS email inboxes, average size about 100M, but a few were approaching 1G. We removed the files on a NFS client and immediately after the rm command returned, we experienced a serious performance problem on the 960s. sysstat indicated that the CPU was pegged at near 100% while all I/O throughput (network, disk, FC SAN) and all file ops (NFS, FCP) dropped to almost nothing. Something grabbed the filer CPU for a minute or two which seriously impacted all of our email servers. We had to restart them all. I suspect that the CPU load was caused by some processing having to do with recovering disk blocks freed by the file deletes. But no blocks were actually freed because the volume had snapshots that were newer than the deleted files. Perhaps the number of snapshots (41) was a factor. I opened a case with netapp on this, but repeating the problem will have dire consequences on our production email systems, so we can't send them performance metrics. I checked bugs online on NOW and didn't find anything that seemed to apply that wasn't marked fixed. I did see a very old bug (4157) first fixed in DOT 5.1, where WAFL would deadlock if many large files were deleted all at once. I was just curious if anyone else has run into anything like this. We are running DOT 7.2.3. In the future when we delete a lot of big files, we'll do them one at a time, with sleeps in between.
