Quotas for A.D. groups

Toasters: Client wants ability to quota by Active Directory group. I see some products out there, but none seem to be able to set a quota on a volume/qtree/directory with the quota pertaining to an A.D. group. Only way I've implemented these in the past is to control access via NTFS ACL such that the A.D. group has write access (everyone else read or none), then set qtree quota. Client has political reasons not to restrict access via NTFS. This is NAS/CIFS only environment. Has anyone else out there found another way, or using any other 3rd party *ware? Almost certainly this is due to inconsistent zoning on the Brocade, or missing zoning for the filer ports on that switch. DS14 mk1 shelf with new disk in caddy?

It simply amazes me still how some people can take a piece of expensive sophisticated technology and treat it like it was a free giveaway or something. A disk has failed in an older DS14 shelf 144 GB 10k fc (Part X274) and the admin replaced it with a run of the mill brand disk hoping it would replace it because it is 'just' a RAID array ;). We have some spare newer 144 GB 10k disks for DS14mk2/4 lying about, do they fit with these older shelve types? Jumbo Packets with netapp FAS3050

Hello All, We have been using our netapp primarily for NAS storage, but I am experimenting with iSCSI now for some specific applications. I managed to create a bit of a network issue recently when I tried enabling jumbo packets on my netapp and my test server. The iSCSI connection kept resyncing and was not stable. I think this was because I didn't create a separate vlan for the devices using jumbo packets. Upon further research, I found mention that some devices/ oses calculate the checksums differently and that can affect the max packet size. Does anyone have any recommendations for a packet size for both the netapp and for my linux servers? is 10240 a safe bet(max size supported by my switch) or should I use something like 9000 or 8192? Should I use a different packet size if I am connecting a target to a windows box? I would ideally like to make a jumbo packets vlan and just set all the devices on that vlan to a larger MTU, but I don't want to create a network traffic problem in the process. cached iscsi initiator?

Hello All, I am currently having a problem with a linux software iscsi initiator that seems to be cached. When I attempt to make the connection from the iscsi interface to the filer, I end up with two iqn's from the same host on the filer via "iscsi show initiator". The problem then is that I cannot mount the LUN due to their being duplicate initiators. Is there a way to clear a cached initiator? Thanks.

FCP curiosity

Hi I've just set up a 3020C with two HBA attached to a couple of Brocade, and on these, 2 couple of HBA coming from 2 Windows host. A SAN, do you know it? J The links are the usual ones: i.e. the 1st HBA of host "A" to the upper Brocade, the 2nd to the lower and so on...the 0b of the head to the upper, the 0d to the lower and the same for other head. I think VCB requires that you are running Virtual Center so you will need to deploy that. which netapp LUN corresponds to which Windows disk ?

We have a bunch of netapp LUNs of the same size mapped to a Windows box and it isn't clear how we can tell which one is which. I'm not a Windows person. The Windows admin sent me the Windows info about one of the disks and I can't see anything that would indicate which LUN it is on the netapp. Nothing appears to correspond to the LUN serial number or the igroup mapping number, etc. Is there a way to read the Windows "disk signature" with a netapp command? Or is there a Windows command to print the LUN serial number? Or what about the igroup mapping number? Even within a drive letter, if the two directories are different mounted shares, it will have to copy. for example. you have an export on your filer called /vol/vol1/home which is mounted on a PC host as E:\ You have another export on your filer called /vol/vol1/home/new which is mounted on a PC as E:\dev\ drag & drop, move, CP, robocopy or whatever you have will copy that data over the LAN via the PC, even though it's the same "drive letter". Hi, when i get this right you are moving data within on volume. e.g. /vol/project/data1/data2copy to /vol/project/data2/destination When this is on the same filer a move should proceed within seconds, as you are used to have it on a local hard disk. You can just use "Drag-and-Drop" when connected to the share with sufficient rights. Just give it a try with a testvol. I'm not a Windows expert, but perhaps you can do it in a DOS window with "move" or "rename". Are you moving the data across qtrees? In this case, you are stuck with copy-then-delete. Thanks Michael, we have no NFS here, and even if we had, I would never try it out. First, I cannot imagine how NFS should work where CIFS does not while handling CIFS-data. The scond reason is, what happens to spaces, special characters, ... And third, wo should NFS handle the nested group permissions of CIFS. With Unix-schema owner/group/world the filer would calculate the permissions for the given user - and after the copy all detailed ACL-information would be lost. And it has a lot of options like purge and mir, but it can never move data within a partition without really transferring them. A collegue wants to move about 6 TB of data in the directory scruture one level up within the same volume. Using the filer with a LUN as a block device would work like this. A normal windows Server also can move data in between the same drive letter without copying it - just in a scond. Is there something like a move in advanced mode or any undocumented ways? ndmpcopy would certainly work and be faster than a cifs file copy. Knut, I think you will find you can use wildcards with the mv command (mv /vol/vol1/data1/sub1/* /vol/vol1/data1 ß that would take EVERYTHING under sub1 and drop it under data1) Of course, as Michael mentioned this should be tested first either with the simlautor, or on a test vol. Also snap restore is no solution: If restore_as_path is specified, the path must be a full path to a filename, and must be in the same volume as the volume used for the restore. Files other than normal files and LUNs are not restored. This includes directories (and their contents), and files with NT streams. So you cannot restore directory X as directory Y. in-line tape copy possible ?

Hello, I haven't checked with Netapp yet, but would anyone here know if it is possible to have a ndmp backup going to two tape drives , thus creating a duplicate copy ? I have a dual port HBA for the tape drive(s) on a FAS3040 head with DOT 7.2.2. The drives are IBM LTO3s and the backup software is NetBackup version 6.0MP4. I would like to add a second tape drive on the the HBA and do the in-line tape copy rather then duplicating the data at a later time. Thanks, George Kahler York University

As a former TSE myself, I can think of some possible situations where a customer can have this feeling while the TSE has a legitimate request. For example, you must be absolutely sure that the problem is in fact occuring during the Perfstat and packet trace, or it's irrelevant. Ideally you would have control to duplicate the problem at will and then capture it. If not, we have to be 100 % sure of what we are looking at (and for). I don't know what the situation was and can't speak definitively for it. All I'm saying is that sometimes context and sequence can be the only difference in an otherwise complete duplicate request for output. If I gave it some more thought, I'd probably think of more similar examples, but I think this is a good illustration. I hope this helps. Cheers ..... Changing Disk Ownership

PLEASE HELP *** I'm in the process of planning to change the disk ownership from hardware to software for various reasons. I've found alot of documentation for doing this on single node system, but none for a Cluster Environment. Has anyone done this on a FAS3050C or does anyone know the procedure? the part of booting into maitence mode and disk upgrade_ownership I understand. My concern is do I uncable the two node or what?
