NetApp Filer FAS2520 and LACP --->>> replace network stack!

Long story but the current Dell Storage Switches have a fault, jumbo frames has failed due to ASIC issues. (confirmed by Dell). We've new Dell Storage switches to replace the two in the datacentre, BUT the entire infrastructure runs through these storage switches. We are trying to decide if we can do this without downtime although risky. The new Dell Storage switches have been tested and jumbo frames is indeed working. Currently Filer is running 8.2.3.7-mode (yes we know old! Flame retardant under-crackers on!), both heads are configured LACP into both switches on the stack Head A e0c - switch 1 e0d - switch 2 e0e - switch 1 e0f - switch 1 Head B e0c - switch 2 e0d - switch 1 e0e - switch 2 e0f - switch 1 Both Heads are in use, with volumes and NFS exports. Failover has been configured properly e.g. we can lose switch 1 or 2 (not at the same time) and service is still available. (just writing this I've had a thought!). We need to replace switch 1 and switch 2 above with switch 1a and switch 2a..... I did wonder if we removed all cables from switch 1, and put them in switch 1a, would this work.... but the LAG would disappear from the Stack.... and when we remove all cables from Switch 2 to Switch 2a, would break.... Is the simplest option just to shutdown the DC and rip and remove. Does failing over the heads help me here, e.g. take over Head A, so all is running on Head B..... Or maybe it cannot be avoided but to shutdown all the VMware vSphere. The more I think about this, I still think the safest is to arrange downtime. Useful Comments ? Thanks Andrew

Upgrade thoughts: 8.3 -> 9.1 -> 9.3

Guys, We're getting ready to ugprade our 4 node 8060 cluster from 8.3.2P9 to 9.1P19 and then onto 9.3P17, all this weekend. My only real concern is the upgrade from 9.1 to 9.3, which lists a major warning for bug 1250500: Expired truststore security certificates causing upgrade and new installation failures. Unfortunately, I can't run an upgrade advisor report for my cluster going from 9.1P19 to 9.3P17, because I'm not yet running 9.1, and it can take upto a week for the autosupport data to get pushed to Upgrade Advisor. Sigh... Has anyone run into this issue when doing the 9.1 -> 9.3 upgrade with the expired certificate? Otherwise, it all looks good, my cluster switches are supported at their current version, etc. John

Can you change the SID of a local NetApp account?

Greetings, We have a 9.3 environment, including Metro Cluster if it matter, and there are 6 SVMs in the environment. If we create a local account named toolmap on SVM1 and SVM2, they will have a unique ID on each SVM. We would like to make the SID for the toolmap account the same on all the SVMs. Is there a way to change that after they have been created? The purpose of this is to prevent having to walk all the file systems and change user access if we had to move a file system to a different SVM. My understanding is that NAE is only available on AFF platforms. As I understand it, the purpose of NAE is to support NVE in combination with aggregate de-dupe by sharing the same encryption key for all (or select) volumes on an aggregate. Maybe I've got that wrong or things have moved on but assuming FAS systems still don't have aggregate-level de-dupe functionality... what would be the benefit of NAE over NVE? When we implemented NVE it was part of an upgrade to FAS 8200 controllers (CDOT 9.1 at the time). We bought the new controllers with some disks and scaled-out the cluster so it was simply a case of vol-moving the data to the 8200 aggregates with the -encrypt flag set. Once that was done we moved the evacuated stacks over to the 8200s and vol-moved again to balance the storage and IOPS. What the workload is depends on what the VM's are doing of course. The general A is that yes there is a latency penalty but YMMV. It's quite possible that *you* in your use case would not notice any such heightened latency. It all depends on how hard you push the system overall. There's a IOPS vs Latency curve of course, there always is. NVE/NAE will move this curve compared to w/o encryption. Exactly how depends on your particular workload pattern. Console/ssh hangs when starting snapmirror

Greetings, This is FAS8080 running 8.2.5P37Mode, and we've seen it on 3 of the same systems that are newly installed (it is for a migration to cmode). Wondering if anyone has run into this issue. We are experiencing an odd issue where when starting a snapmirror of serial/SP the console hangs (messages do appear on the screen). If we ssh into the system it works fine. If we drop and go back to console it is still hung. We've also tested starting the snapmirror via ssh and that hangs as well, and the console works fine. I havent confirmed whether or not if I then drop that SSH session and relogin if it is still hung. I've never seen this before on new systems, and wondering if anyone has seen the exact issue. I have however seen consoles/ssh hang because of system load or wafl checks, but never with establishing a snapmirror baseline. Regards, Douglas

Hello toasters, I’m attempting to move a 3TB vol to a new aggregate. The destination aggregate has 100TB available space. It’s been preparing to transfer for over 3 hours…. Is this normal? Hi all, Has anyone got good dirt on the strengths and weaknesses of FabricPools? We're looking into a refresh where we have tons of old stale data, and FabricPools hooked upto a DataGrid block storage might be a good way to get a decent setup. Not sure, and I'm sure there are gotchas we need to look out for. But anyone have good/bad experiences? We're looking to consolidate about 400T on two 7-mode pairs (3250s and 3220s) into one new setup. Not sure which way we should go... John

volume statistics

Back in the day, I used to be able to run: statistics show -vserver ${vserver} -object volume -raw true -counter read_ops|write_ops|other_ops|read_data|write_data and get back counters of total reads/writes/etc going back to either when the filer was last booted, or the volume was moved from one filer to another. looks like nowadays in ontap9 you are supposed to turn on statistics collection for some period of time, then stop it, and then inspect that collection run. which is great and all, but all I want is the total number of reads or writes to a volume, not for a specific period of time, but overall. are these basic counters buried somewhere still in ontap9?

Hyper-V and MetroCluster

Greetings, The short question is: Is there any way to manage Hyper-V between clusters in a MC configuration without the VMs crashing? We have seen KBs saying the Witness and persistent file handles can only be moved between cluster nodes. We have a MC configuration that was running 9.1P17 and upgraded it to 9.3P14 during a downtime. We also had to physically move one half of the MC during this downtime. We have a Hyper-V cluster running Server 2012R2, SMB 3.0, and CIFS file systems housing the VMs set as continuously available. During the downtime, most, but not all VM went down hard when switched to the other half of the MC, and also when switching back. It appears linux VMs housed on the same cluster/SVM that were moved did not object to the disruption and did not reboot. Since the VM disk space went away when cluster1 was switched to cluster2, the clients had no access to disk space, and we have no event logs. We assume they paniced and rebooted. The Hyper-V clients failed immediately as the switchover was started. Are there any types of timeout settings that can be configured for the VMs so they just pause during this and pick up again when the SVMs start up on the other half of the MC? If the problem is with CIFS, we would be open to iscsi or SAN storage if it would allow them to survive a MC switchover. Adding Flash Pool - Error

We are trying to increase our Flash Pool to an existing aggregate and getting the following error message: Data ONTAP API Failed: Cannot add capacity from storage pool "DHIP10NTAP02_SSD" to aggregate "aggr01_DHIP10NTAP01_02", because the currently allocated capacity to the aggregate does not span across all disks belonging to the storage pool. Grow the aggregate before allocating more capacity from this storage pool. (Error: 13001) The aggregate is 69.21 TB in size and has 185.93 GB of cache per a Storage Pool already allocated. Chris

DS2246 & Flash Pool Configuration

I have a FAS6290 cluster and we are upgrading the DS4243 to DS2246 (600 GB SAS & 200 GB SSD). We have six shelves in a loop 5 – trays of SAS and 1 – tray of SSD. I am wondering should I create a dedicated Flash Pool for each aggr or should I add the SSDs as Cache to each aggr? Chris

quota report -x sucks on 8.x 7-mode

Sigh... I've just about had it upto hear in parsing the output of old 7-mode filer commands. Especially for CIFS shares or quotas where you have spaces in the username, qtree, or both. Holy crap is it hard to deal with. Anyone have perl code (sorry, I'm so retro in my scripting choices! ;-) using the Netapp SDK to grab this info in a more consistent manner? And using which SDK? I've tried with an old 5.1 version I had kicking around, but the examples suck. Just downloaded the 9.6 and 9.3 SDKs to play with as well, but haven't cracked them open quite yet. It's trivial (sorta) with cDot to just export the data in CSV format natively, but old 7-mode filers are a pain to parse reliably. I'd post my existing perl code, but it's pretty ugly since I've started to hack my way into doing parsing, and it's just not going as well as I hoped. LOL. Thanks for letting me vent. John

Statistics output limit at 5k objects

Looks like we just went over 5000 volumes in our cluster last night, and now I am getting this error when collecting some statistics, which we do via cron, and dump into a database: pd-dd::*> statistics show -vserver pd -object volume -raw true -counter read_ops|write_ops|other_ops|read_data|write_data There are no entries matching your query. Warning: Failed to get statistics for object volume: The number of instances for this object exceeds the limit of 5000. Use the "-instance" parameter to limit the number of instances. It would appear 5000 is some sort of magic internal number, after which CDOT will refuse to emit statistics. Using the -instance parameter does nothting to help the situation, as that requires specifying the individual volume you are looking for. I looked around under 'statistics settings' and 'statistics preset' but don't see any sort of control for this. Any ideas on how to get around this 5k limit? 9.5p6 FWIW
