1TB SATA, raid group size, 16TB limits etc

is the raid group recommended size still 16 with the new 1TB sata drives? basically we are pretty much limited to one shelf per aggregate--not sure how this is good thing. is the 16tb limit going away anytime soon? it is becoming increasingly too restrictive as these larger drive sizes are introduced. or am i just supposed to create one shelf aggregates of 1tb drives from now on?

Hi Toasters, I found this post interesting so I polled some of our Engineering folks and this was the consensus opinion: This is not really a problem for any modern storage system. It is true that errors can develop over time - or even during the manufacture of disk drives. Every drive has built-in error correction codes that detect, and usually correct such a bit error. If the string of errors is too great to be handled by the ECC codes, the drive will report back that the sector is unreadable, at which point RAID algorithms will "fix" the error from the information stored on other sectors . Our RAID-DP means two drives can even have the same data in error, and we can still recover. Our SATA drives also use a checksum scheme for further protection - we utilize an additional portion of the drive as overhead to store checksums that move with the data through the system to insure what was written is returned to the application. In essence a third level of protection. This same type of protection against bits in error covers our FC drive systems. Mr Wendt is correct in indicating that dedupe (aka block sharing) could exacerbate any data corruption event. We take this seriously and believe that the extra steps NetApp has taken create one of the most reliable deduplication architectures in the industry. Yet these systems reveal a specific, known deficiency of SATA disk drives that demand companies exercise caution as to what environments they deploy these systems into. The inability to access even a bit of data can result in multiple files becoming unreadable since they all may depend on a specific bit of data to complete their reconstruction. High capacity SATA-based storage systems are the answer to many companies' archiving and backup problems. But SATA bits can bite and using SATA drives to store large amounts of deduplicated data is not always the match made in heaven that vendors make them out to be. Persistant CIFS Share Across Logins

Greetings, I apologize for what could be a silly question, but I'm strictly in the storage/UNIX world. I've set up a CIFS share on my 3040 (v7.2.4) for a Windows 2003 server to mount so that an application can read and write data to it. The windows administrator says the share is not staying mapped because it is being disconnected when the user logs out. This particular application needs access to the share when no one is logged into the system. How does a Windows administrator keep a NetApp CIFS share mounted as as drive letter so that applications can use that share when no one is logged in? Oracle RAC Deployment Guie/Help

Hi We’ve being trying to deploy an Oracle RAC on Netapp, using Oracle Enterprise Linux, SnapDrive for Unix (iSCSI Protocol), ASM and SnapManager for Oracle, but cannot do so successfully, because we don’t have the knowledge or resources. We have being searching the netapp library and netapp site for documentation that discusses the procedure for achieving the above, but cannot find anything the meets the above, most guides discuss NFS, but since SMO doesn't support ASM or NFS we need to use either FCP or iSCSI and SMO requires SnapDrive for UNIX. How to identify a hot disk

So I am getting the following when running sysstat -u. As far as I know nothing should be hitting the array hard enough to drive disk utilization to 100%, much less hold it there. What can I do to further determine what's causing this? Have you played with Juniper or Riverbed WAN expander/accelerator devices? Have used them successfully with SM and high latency connections. Budget allowing ... But may be less PIA than manual scripting plus additional benefits they offer. Possible to deny all permission changes inside a CIFS share?

I was wondering if in any way it would be possible to prevent all NTFS permission changes inside a CIFS share or volume, including by file owners. I'm not concerned about the admins, but we want to support a strict permission structure with writable directories according to inherited permissions, but not allow end users to subvert the permission scheme by changing permissions on files they own. Wondering if there is any way to do this, or even if there are plausible or solid reasons why it would not be possible at all. I know you can remove the 'Change Permissions' NTFS property, but file owners can change their own. Thanks for any input.

snmp, missing shelf overview

I'm trying to monitor ambient temperatures from all our shelves using SNMP. I've found enclTempSensorsCurrentTemp in netapp.mib and it keeps all values I need BUT I don't see a map snmp.id=>shelfid. Did anyone ever found a mapping or knows how enclTempSensorsCurrentTemp is getting filled? Anyone from netapp reading here who can ask to add those informations to your mib in future releases? TIA, Stefan.

There is no issue with rights etc, the problem is that there are a few files, that have been created some time ago, have different versions and a different content, just from the OS that you are looking from. I tracked this user issue on my admin host (SuSe 9.3 2.6.11.4-20a-default): (The original host is running on Solaris, both the problem occurs on every host) I mounted the volume twice, via NFS & CIFS. SMB Mount: //nstore2/pdmmig$ on /mnt1 type smbfs (0) NFS Mount: nstore2:/vol/pdmmig on /mnt type nfs (rw,addr=172.18.131.211) This is one of the files that are affected by this strange issue: ls -l /mnt1/mcad_vault/Singapore_Dev_Loc_xml/CAD_NEW_1_CAApData.xml -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2540 Jul 19 2007 /mnt1/mcad_vault/Singapore_Dev_Loc_xml/CAD_NEW_1_CAApData.xml ls -l /mnt/mcad_vault/Singapore_Dev_Loc_xml/CAD_NEW_1_CAApData.xml -rw-rw-rw- 1 6500 6500 4136 Jul 20 2007 /mnt/mcad_vault/Singapore_Dev_Loc_xml/CAD_NEW_1_CAApData.xml A diff on both files, proves the difference that is already indicated by the file size. There is no difference between the two paths, both mounts point to the same path and to the same file, but there is a difference in the content between them. I've already tested a little bit with caching, links etc, but this doesn't seem to point in the right way. Additionally it's not possible for me, to reproduce the problem with new files. Multiprotocol - file handles problem

Hello all... I am using my filer in a multiprotocol environment, where the same qtree is being accessed through CIFS as well as NFS. Recently i ran into this problem that whenever the file in the qtree was accessed by an application, it was opened as READ-ONLY. The CIFS user were unable to change/re-write the file. I changed the security style from UNIX to NTFS but the issue was not resolved. I re-verified the entries in /etc/usermap.cfg and added few entries in the usermap.cfg like abc\*==* abc.def \ Administrator == root But the problem remains unresolved. when CIFS is terminated and re-started, the filer gives the following messages: =========================================================== Sat May 31 15:43:44 PKT [befas21: cifs.umap.cfgFile.badEntry:error]: CIFS: Invalid entry in /etc/usermap.cfg, line 29: Invalid syntax. In this situation, I typically recommend an NTFS qtree, then use usermap.cfg to map unix users to the NTFS qtree. Assuming you are using NIS, if the usernames are the same as Active Directory, the default usermap.cfg will suffice. Multiprotocol access works well once setup properly; it's one of our strengths. I would open a case with the support center to troubleshoot this further as this can be complex, but would work really well once you get through it. Snapmanager for sql duration

I'm doing a snap manager for sql migration, it's been sitting @ 74% complete for about 4 hours now. I'm seeing I/O on the luns as well as traffic on the fiber, but the disks have been @ the same capacity for quite some time and there are no new event logs/report entries. It's only about ~300m of data, but I've got pre & post verify on. Other smaller dbs have already been migrated.... Does this seem excessively long? Quota re-initialization on re-joining AD domain

Hello all... Recently we had made some changes to Windows AD, and the filer was required to terminate 'CIFS' and then re-join AD through 'CIFS SETUP'. One of the volumes that was holding CIFS shares had quotas enabled...After re-joining the domain, I had to re-initialize quotas... I was of the view that no re-initialization would be required...but it was the other way round... Is it normal???or is there some problem in the CIFS setup... ??? Any comments...???? Thanx

Is there a limit to the number of VM's per NFS export?

For the folks using NFS to hold their VMDK files, have you run into a limit to how many VM's a single share can support? Either a hard limit or just a point where performance degrades? I'm trying to figure out how many volumes I'll need to create to hold ~300 VMs on my 3070 cluster. I am rather puzzled. cn1:~ # rsh filer df -h vol1 Filesystem total used avail capacity Mounted on /vol/vol1/ 2448GB 776GB 1671GB 32% /vol/vol1/ snap reserve 612GB 158GB 453GB 26% /vol/vol1/.. So according to this we have 156GB worth of snapshots. So far so good. cn1:~ # rsh filer snap delta vol1 Volume vol1 working... ... Summary... I would expect df -h to show *more* than snap delta (due to the fact that we have more intermediate snapshots); but how comes that - apparently having 260GB worth of snapshot data - I only see 158GB in space accounting? I am likely missing something obvious. Hmm ... is it possible that "snap delta" accounts for both changed *and* new data while "df -h" accounts for *changed* data only? Looks plausible... Consider this scenario. 1) take snapshot #1 of a volume 2) create a new and very large file 3) take snapshot #2 of volume 4) delete the very large file 5) take snapshot #3 At this point the "delta" between snapshots 1 and 3 and the live volume will be very small. But the "delta" between snapshot 2 and any other snapshot (or the live volume) will be large. This is because snapshot 2 (and only snapshot 2) still contains the large file that was deleted. So you can see that the delta between the live volume and each of its snapshots does not necessarily increase with the age of the snapshot. Is there somebody explain why I can't find detailed white papers, tecg resosurce docs on now and so on? So that, more on the relatively new world of 10 Gbps networks. Does anyone direct experience? Are you using it in your site? Thanks in advance

Benfits of using LACP over Etherchannel?

I have a two VIFs (one for each filer head) spread across a pair of stacked 3750-Es. Right now I'm using Etherchannel on the switches but I've been reading a lot saying that LACP may be better. I'm trying to figure out what exactly the benefit would be, can anyone clarify?
