We saw something similar with the same setup, the service wouldn't start during the install. We got round it by logging on as the snapdrive service account and installing it whilst logged on as that (I an assuming you've set up your service account with the right permissions etc as covered in the snapdrive admin guide). vol autosize setting?

Is there a way to tell 'vol autosize' when it should jump to the next incremental increase. From my tests it look like it increases the volume size to the next increment when the volume reaches around 85% full. Is there a way to change that to say 90 or 95% full? Thanks -- Romeo Theriault

Greetings, I take a daily snapshots (named ss-YYYYMMDDHHmm) of several volumes on my filers. I would like to automatically delete the oldest snapshot (assuming it's not busy) when a certain number of snapshots are present in the volume (ie, only keep the latest 3 snapshots). Is this possible? If not, does anyone have any scripts where it can be done from a host? If you have snapdrive installed, then you can use the snapdrive CLI to create the snap from the host. The other options are rsh or ssh to the filer to create the snapshot. Difference between BMC and RLM

Hello all... i have an IBM N3600 running ONTAP 7.2.2.... i am having problem accessing the storage system through the BMC... earlier i used to access/administer the storage with "naroot" account on BMC and then running the 'system console' command to administer the storage... suddenly the BMC has denied access and despite giving the correct the user name: naroot and password....the BMC responds..."access denied"...i have run the 'bmc reboot' and 'bmc setup' commands...but no luck... forcefully i have to use the 'e0a' interface to administer the system.... Also....whats the difference between RLM and BMC...'rlm status' gives no rlm installed....so wats the difference between BMC and RLM... Thanx....

Netapp Heating and Air Flow?

We have a netapp FAS3050C, installed into two netapp cabinets, with 20 ds14mk4 shelves. My question is regarding air flow and air conditioning, what is the best practice or what have you done at your site to ensure that the netapp stays cool? Our problem is the operation/server room temprature is set to 23 Degrees Celcilus, but the therometer measures the temprature in the netapp cabinet at 41 Degress Celcilus. Any ideas or guides would be helpful. Migrating data without service interruption : 3020 -> 3140

Hi, we just received a new 3140 cluster here to upgrade an existing 3020c production filer. And now we're looking for a way to migrate the existing data (~18TB) with the least possible downtime. Ideally, we would use SnapMirror to copy the data on the new filer and then transparently (for clients) switch the production system, similarly to what happens when a cluster member fails over to the other member. But we don't know if this is possible. So the questions are: - do you think such a procedure could be successful ? - do you have any other ideas to migrate the data without service interruption ? Hi all... Is there any way to log all SSH sessions on the filer in /etc/messages...or somehow view current SSH sessions...especially the IP addresses of hosts... With default settings, the message daemon only logs failed logon attempts... Thanx

Weird autosupport problem

Autosupport worked fine up until about six weeks ago, no it doesn't. We can't think of anything that changed in the environment. We can ping the mailserver, I tried telnetting to the mailserver on port 25 to see if it is still relaying, seems to be OK. We weren't seeing any messages at all regarding autosupport in the messages file, an time we tested. mounting a volume on windows machine from a linux machine using ssh

I have a windows 2003 server where I have set up an ssh service. Now I want to mount a filer volume there. I can execute normal commands using ssh on that windows machine from my linux boxes but I can not successfully execute mount/ net use commands. Every time I try it, I get error: The local device name is already in use. Though I can execute same commands using rsh. snapvault start question

I'm just starting to test snapvault and I have a few questions about it's usage that I haven't found sufficient answers for in the documentation. I'm hoping someone might be able to help explain them to me. * On the snapvault start command you can specify your source (primary) dataset by these three different options. 1. filer:/vol/volname/qtree_name - for a particular qtree 2. filer:/vol/volname/- - for non-qtree data in a volume 3. filer:/vol/volname - for contents of entire volume including all qtrees. My question is, "Is there any difference between options 2 and 3, if I don't have any qtrees in any of my volumes?". Second question is in regards to a note in the snapvault documentation that states: "7.2.3 Volume to Qtree SnapVault When issuing the snapvault start command, you are not required to specify a qtree name for the source; however, this practice is not recommended. This type of relationship increases the performance of the SnapVault transfer; however, it also increases the amount of time it takes to perform a backup. Since you must specify a qtree for the SnapVault destination, an entire volume then resides in a qtree on the destination. When it's time for the restore via the Data ONTAP CLI, the entire contents of the qtree, which contains all the data from the source volume, is restored to a qtree on the SnapVault primary system. Once the data is restored, you must then manually copy the data back to the appropriate location." As I've eluded to in my question above, we don't use any qtrees in our environment. Is the above note saying that when I do a snapvault restore that it's going to restore back into a qtree and I'll have to manually copy the contents out of the qtree back into the root dir of the volume before it will be back to the way it was before the restore? I'm hoping that's not what it's saying, though it sure sounds like it. Thanks for any help on this, Romeo

Hi I have a few random question regarding the FAS3170 and Data ONTAP 7.2.3. 1. Does netapp support IBM 3583 Tape Library or has anyone successfuly configure a FAS system with this library? 2. What are the maximum number of volumes that you can snapmirror, I know concurrent on the above DOT is 100, is it equal to the number of volumes -1 for vol0, thus being 499? 3. cifs and umask?!?

Hello toasters, we have several volumes with unix-sec style where there is a cifs share on that volume/qtree as well. For this reason we use the usermap.cfg and it works quite well so far. The only question i have is, when i create a new file on a volume/qtree with unix sec-style using the cifs share and a windows user the unix-permission is always 777. Is there something like "umask" which can be set on the filer to get another permission style?? Windows Services for Unix NFS Client

Has anyone had any luck mounting a filer using Window's Services for UNIX NFS Client? I've tried mounting it with mount \\filer\vol\volume and run into a problem with mount not supporting multi directory paths. I get an error message stating "The network path can not be found" with the above mount. I tried accessing it in Windows explorer but it doesn't show up there. I know it can see the filer because I ran into trouble with it using non reserved ports and saw the message in the logs, I've since fixed that issue. Is there a work around for the multi directory path limitation? Thanks John -- Contractor
