Thanks to everyone who responded. It looks like I can do the following to move disk shelves from a FAS3050 CF pair to a FAS3170 CF pair. 1) Upgrade the FAS3050 pair to ONTAP 7.3.2, which is on the FAS3170s. 2) Run "options disk.auto_assign off" on FAS3170s (to be safe). 3) Shut down the FAS3050s and FAS3170s. 4) Connect each shelf chain from the FAS3050s to just one of the FAS3170 heads. 5) Boot FAS3170s into maintenance mode and run "disk assign all" to assign software disk ownership. (Why must this be done in maintenance mode? Because the disks are not spares? Because the FAS3050s do not use software disk ownership?) 6) Shut down FAS3170s and connect the shelf chains to both heads. 7) Boot FAS3170s normally. Should see foreign aggregates. Run "aggr online" to bring online. (I will not have any aggr or vol name conflicts.) Also run "options disk.auto_assign on". VFiler Physical Disk Reserve

What is the physical disk reserve on a V-Filer supposed to be? And is it tune-able? I have a v-filer setup and it looks like it's holding back 25% between the backend luns (on an IBM DS8300) and the front-side aggregates. This seems like a huge amount-- more than it would hold back for a physical disk and excessive in light of the existing physical protection on the DS8300. TIA, Fred

parts finder

Hi all, Could someone do me a favor and take a screenshot of a sysconfig with output showing an ethernet adaptor or FC adaptor line as well as the results of parts finder from the now site? Shrinking an aggregate via netboot ?

Hi list, I currently have to address a quite interesting problem : long story short, we need to remove disks from the root (and only) aggregate of a 3020 cluster. Since this is not possible [1], and as we don't have other aggregates on this filer, do you think it would be feasible to : - copy the root volume on another filer ; - netboot a head ; - destroy the root aggregate ; - create another one, with the correct number of disk drives ; - copy the root volume back ? Matt, we can't retain vol0 for a couple of reasons - 1) The old heads are x86 (V3020) and new heads are x64 (N6040 / V3120), therefore the binaries are different. 2) NetApp ONTAP on old heads, IBM ONTAP on new ones. How about if I do a config dump and a config dump -v on the old heads and do a config restore on the new ones before swinging the aggrs? They are both running 7.2.6.1 (I had to downlevel the n6040 FROM 7.2.3 for snapmirror purposes). For #2, you are correct on most of the steps, but as you will be retaining your root volumes, there's no need to re-create shares or change dns etc. Procedurally it's: 1. Halt existing cluster and power off the nodes 2. Rack and cable the new cluster, power on the nodes and go into maintenance mode. 3. Verify that the ports you want to use are initiators and document the WWPN's (storage show adapter) 4. Update the zoning on the switches for the new initiator ports 5. On the back-end SAN, update your host profile to reflect the new WWPN's 6. From maint mode, reassign the LUNs from the old systemID to the new one, repeat for the other node 7. using aggr status from maint mode, validate that you can see your various aggrs and that you have one marked as a root aggr on each controller 8. halt both nodes and boot them up normally. 9. Upgrade ontap if you are changing CPU architectures. As a pre-step, you might want to validate that the version of OnTap that's on the CF of the new controllers is compatible w/ the version of ontap (raid labels etc). If the existing OS/raid labels etc in-use is 7.2.X, you will very likely want to upgrade to 7.3.X before doing the head swap, as the last V-Series I un-boxed last month was running 7.3.2GA. 1) I have a customer who accidentally added a LUN to an existing aggr that was incorrectly sized. What is the correct procedure to replace that LUN with a correctly sized one? They can't resize the LUN on the existing array as it's out of space. Do I create a correct sized LUN on another array, add it as a spare and then do a disk fail against the wrong sized LUN? I've never tried this on a gateway. 2) Does anyone have some procedures for a headswap on a v-series/gfiler? There appears to be a "black hole" on the NOW site in regards to how-to upgrade a v-series/gfiler. Thanks to everyone for all the helpful suggestions. Through experimentation we discovered that we cannot mix LACP and VLAN tagging. We don't know if it's the switch or ONTAP and we haven't seen any documentation or bug reports. The switch is a stack of two Nortel units. Didn't note the model, but each unit has 48 ports each 1Gbit. We are trying to use best practices for setting up a CF pair of FAS6040s on a VMWARE data network, but are having problems. Nothing on the data network can ping the netapp heads nor can the heads ping each other over the data network. The switch administrator has verified that the switch stack is configured correctly. He says the switch reports that the netapps have not negotiated LACP yet. I want to run by our netapp config commands to verify that I haven't missed any commands or done them in the wrong order. The switch is a stack of two units. One head is supposed to favor one unit and the other head is supposed to favor the other unit. Does this look correct? ifconfig -a shows that all the physical interfaces have negotiated auto-1000t-fd-up full duplex ping 192.168.15.8 (from 192.168.15.6) fails and vice versa. To troubleshoot this, I think I will delete all the vifs, create vifc again, and put the VLANs on it and put the IPs on vifc-201 and vifc-202 and see what that gets me. What is the best practice for mixing (or not mixing) different I/O load types in an aggregate? Should I keep similar loads together, or "mix and match" the sets. For instance, I am looking at placing a variety of different data sets on four aggregates. These data sets include sequential backups-to-disk, nfs and cifs file shares, and "QA-dev" luns. Should I keep all the backups on one aggregate, and all the file shares on another? What do you generally do? Are there situations that will adversely affect performance? TIA, Fred

The other mode is Clustered ONTAP which is based on the GX (aka Spinnaker) version of ONTAP. It's intended for those running on that platform today. In 8.1, there will be a single ONTAP once again. 8.0 merges the code itself. We expect just about all current 7.x customers to move up to 7-mode and GX customers to move to clustered mode when going to 8.0. As far as migrations to 64-bit aggrs, that will depend but it will have to be logical not physical (no VSM, no vol/aggr copy). The right way will vary on your environment so in general I would recommend customers work with their account team and talk to the migration experts to talk about your specific scenario. It may not make sense to migrate in some cases as you can have both types of aggrs on a system. Even at 10 GbE (which interfaces we don't have), it will take minimum 4.5 hours that way :( And breaking the mirror makes me nervous. Deduplication volume size limits.

The most recent documentation I have states that there is a 1TB volume size limit for SIS enabled FlexVol's on FAS2050 hardware. Is this still the case as of Data ONTAP 7.3.3? I hear rumors from time to time of the limit being increased to 2TB or beyond, though I understand memory is the limiting factor. I'll keep searching around NOW for newer documentation than I have but figured someone here would know off the top of their heads. :) Thanks, Ray

Deduplication and space usage - best practices

We use deduplication on our N3600 (FAS2050C) with ESX (vSphere these days) via NFS. I'm curious how those of you out there with a similar setup manage your disk space and identify "critical" threshholds. We also do thin provisioning so we're thinking about a worst-case scenario where we have to restore from backups and end up with thick provisioned and non deduped VMDK files. We don't want to be too conservative though -- may as well not be using dedupe at all... :) Interested in how others on the list deal with this. Thanks, Ray

10gb Network Bandwidth concern

We have installed dual port 10Gbe (x1008a-r6) in our FAS3170A, configured them as a vif using lacp, with load balancing as mac. What we are noticing is that we are only get 1.4Gbits bandwidth per port. Even though we should realy be achiving at least 20Gbits. The filers connect to a 6509 CISCO switch, with each interface connecting to a different module for redundancy. The two interfaces from the filer define a port channel on the switch so that they reflect the vif on each filer. The tool we use to check on the throughput is called Solarwinds and Orion. This tool shows that: a. For netapp1, each interface is shown to work at 1.4101Gbits. The vif is shown to work at 2.8201Gbits. b. For netapp2, each interface is shown to work at 10Gbits. The vif is shown to work at 20Gbits, but we don't get more that 2.8201 Gbits Is this normal or what are we misising? We have a case open (2001542643) is anyone for NetApp has access. Slot labeling for a 3070?

I'm getting a set of PAM II cards for my 3070 and have started doing some of the installation research. The system configuration guide recommends they be installed in specific slots but I can't tell what they mean. Is there a doc that has the slots diagrammed in it? Boot from SAN

Does anyone know how to configure boot from SAN when we multiple paths available to us? Obviously we will not have true mutlipathing available to us at the BIOS level. Is configuration of the boot order an acceptable solution or does anyone else know of any cleverness out there. Physical displacement of disk shelves -- hot ?

Hi, I'm currently trying to physically move two aggregates from one filer (3020) to another one (2050), and I'd like to do that without service interruption. AFAICT, I'm first supposed to boot one head under maintenance mode to take the aggregate offline, but when I do that (on the taked-over head), I get a quite scary message relative to possible data corruption. So the question is : is it at all possible to take an aggregate (containing FlexVols) offline and move disk shelves in takeover mode ? Cheers, Simon
