Does it just measure how long it's taking to service requests from the back ports to the front ports? Or does it measure some sort of fibre ping to the host? I am looking in the management console in DFM/Ops Mgr and seeing spikes of very high volume and lun latency (seconds...) on an N-Series IBM gateway filer. I've looked at all the usual suspects, including misaligned VMs, high correlated IOPs, delays on the backend disk, deferred consistency points. Nothing is matching up. Most of the connected systems are on a Cisco UCS with NPIV. The systems with the lowest IOs have the highest latency numbers. Thoughts? TIA, Fred

write cache setting for Windows

This seems like a newbie question, but I'm confused and found limited info on this. Should I be using the "Enable Write Caching" setting on my Windows disks that are Netapp lun (FC) based? Does this tell Netapp to use write caching for that lun/port, or does it tell Windows to cache somewhere on the local system? TIA, Fred

Hi all, for disk shelves DS4243 the configuration guide reports only a rule for disks "same type" in the same shelf, and not "same size". Is it possible to have, i.e., 12 1 TB SATA disks and 12 2 TB SATA disks on the same DS4243? Or, i.e, 300 and 600 SAS? In this way I could have, using software ownership in cluster, controllers with different amount of spaces... Regards

As from my mail I've already run the TS Client in "console" mode (/admin from Windows 7, Vista or XP SP3) and I've already tried the "native" console in vCenter (or vClient...). Not tried VNC but I don't think that customers could be happy to have VNC installed ONLY for this! It's incredible to think that NetApp engineers did not think that this environment is nowadays quite normal!!! And this is a NEW bug because I've always run SME config wizard till version 6 when on W2K3 and Exchange 2K3/2K7...this is new for E2K10 on W2K8 64bit! I'm really disappointed but smiling... Hi all, I've run up against this bug: https://kb.netapp.com/support/index?page=content&id=2011025 Running SME 6.0 on a VMware VM with Exchange 2010 I cannot run configuration wizard because no storage group/db are visible in the console. Obviously the only way to access to the VM is using Terminal Services...I've tried of course both the vCenter console and the MSTSC client in /admin mode. No luck. Suggestions?

Moved volume to new filer, administrator ACLs now invalid?

Greetings, We replaced a filer named home2 with a new head. We physically moved disks from the old head to the new head. One of the volumes that we moved uses ntfs security style. I used to be able to map the volume/share as user home2\administrator and had "full contol" on everything. Now, however, the home2\administrator user on the new head has a new SID while the ACLs in the volume display the old SID. So now Administrator has limited access rights (can't drill down into folders, can't change ACLs, etc.) Doesn't the local Administrator user trump the ACLs ? Anyone have any suggestions? I'm a Unix guy with limited Windows knowledge. By the way, the filer is a member of a Windows AD domain, but I'm not a domain admin, so I don't have a privileged AD account. Hi all, I just wanted to let you know that there is an open position for a Netapp Instructor. You should have extensive real-world netapp experience, be personable, funny, able to tell stories and explain complex subjects in a simple manner. People who have worked as PSEs are probably a good fit. The salary is very competitive, but the main benefits are in the flexibility and schedule. You'll get to travel (I've been to places like hong kong on the company dime) and meet lots of people. I generally only work about two weeks / month, but some some instructors work every week. We will happily teach you how to teach, but just to be up-front, the process of becoming an instructor isn't instant. You'll have to take each of the course three times (one to audit, one to co-teach, and one supervised-solo), and you'll have to do this for the fundamentals class, the san, nfs, cifs, data protection and boot camp classes - it can take a while. Once you're through that however, I can personally attest to the fact that it's an *amazing* job. You would be reporting to me, and I'm a pretty darn good boss. :) Well, I am if you like my management style, anyway. Basically all I want is regular reports on how things are going, what help (if any) you need to do your job better, and then I leave you the heck alone. One of the main benefits of this job is you are your own boss, effectively sub-contracting, and we just make sure you've got everything you need, make sure your reviews are consistently good, and you're getting exposed to the new stuff coming down the pipe. Virtual storage console RCU mistery...

Hi all, for the first time I've experimented the RCU tool that now is inside the VSC 2.0.1 for VMware. But during the tests I've noted something that left me doubtful. I've always thought (and this is the NetApp message to folk :)) that the "rapid" clone utility used some way the flex_clone or the lun_clone techniques to quickly create vmdk images starting from something on active file system volumes... I mean: vmdk on a lun/volume -> Data Ontap snapshot of this -> flex_clone -> rewritable image of the originating data and, of course, all this for dozens of VM performed very quick because there's nothing to transfer!!! Instead when I ran those test I've choosen a running VM, selected the NetApp menu item -> provisioning and cloning -> rapid clone and, looking both at the putty on my filer and on the status bar of vCenter I've seen no activities on the NetApp at all (no snapshots, no clone and so on...) while the vCenter reported: creating snapshot (a VMware one!!!) -> copying ....copying??? In short the same time and technique I could script or manually execute. So, why the rapid clone tool asked me for a flex_clone license??? And why if I would use it on FC or iSCSI LUN? I could understand for VMware datastore on NFS...And, last, why a flex_clone if there's NO cloning (data ontap) at all? Have I missed something? Regards,

Snapmanager for everything monitoring

I have about 10 SQL server running SMSQL and a couple Exchange Clusters running SME. We ran into a bit of an issue where some servers were not running the automated or scheduled tasks, and it went unnoticed for a day or two. The completion or failure job is set via SM email even if successful, so I get a few emails a day to say the least. What I am looking for is what folks use out there to monitor their SMGR jobs/backups. • Do you just rely on email, and if a job does not come in at its specific time, become alarmed? • Do you run a sys logger against the filers and look for those jobs/alerts? • Do you run some fancy script I can bribe you for, and I will buy you a beer in return? • Looks like powershell for Netapp is cool. I ran a snapshot script that was pretty cool.. Maybe ask for some help there. snapmirror a-sis volume to unsupported platform

Hello Toasters A-SIS is not supported on fas270 platform ( nearstore personality can't be enable on this platform) I know i can use QSM to mirror a deduped qtree to a fas270 but i wonder what will happen if i will VSM a deduped volume to a fas270 ? will it fail or just occupy more space at the destination If i have a volume which currently not replicating and i enable a-sis on that volume and in the future i want to start mirror this volume with VSM is there anything i can do to reverse the dedupe in order to allow VSM ? Syncmirror (Local) doubts

Hi all, times ago I used Local Syncmirror to "move" data from old aggregates created with 144 FC disks to new 300 GB FC ones and I remember that the old:new ratio was 2:1, i.e., from an aggregate on 56 144 GB disks on 4 shelves to a new one on 28 300 GB disks on 2 shelves...But I don't remember other stuff related to raid group, geometry of them and so on...simply I used the aggr mirror and Ontap chose the needed disks from a pool of spare (Pool 1 as usual) Now I've a similar issue but with a lot of doubts (re)reading the manual. First of this is that manual states that from original aggregate and the mirrored one disks must be the same number...and I ask myself how I was able to do that job times ago?!? Anyway the problem is this: Current aggregate: 56 disks on 4 shelves of 300 GB but with rg and disk geometry wrong (rg0 20 disks, rg1 26 and rg2 8, a couple of spare). The customer wants to rebuild this aggregate using Local Syncmirror a first time to transfer data to other disks available and a second time to put the data back on the 300 GB disks with a correct rg geometry (only 2 rg with 26 disks each). I've 8 or more shelves with 144 FC disks available. Can I use Local Syncmirror fm the 4 300 GB shelves to an automatic created mirror on those 8/9 shelves letting Ontap choose the disks from the Pool 1 spares? What's about the aggr mirror xxxx -v "victim_aggrname" found on the man sections and not on the manual? Can I create a new aggregate on the 144 GB disks the use in some way this syntax? Once splitted the mirror I will temporarily have the data on the 144 disks (if work the points before) so I will be able to destroy the 'old', zero the disks and then...? To create another mirror to put the data back on the 300 GB disks will I have to create an aggregate before with the right disk geometry I want and then use this as "victim aggregate" It's a little bit complicate I know....I apologize in advance for the headaches I will cause in somebody :) but thank you in advance also! Hi all, we're experiencing this issue nevertheless we've applied the suggestion stated on "SnapManager for SAP 3.1 Administration Guide" (pag. 45) "SAP uses a standard layout for Oracle database installations. In this layout, SAP places copies of the Oracle control file in the /oracle/SID/origlogA, /oracle/SID/origlogB, and /oracle/SID/sapdata1 file systems. The control file in the sapdata1 file system conflicts with the SnapManager requirements for separating the control files and datafiles into separate volumes and must be adjusted to allow for fast restore capability." The N3600-A20 is a 2050 cluster. EXN4000 is the same as DS14MK4 (the "4" in the EXN4000 name stands for 4 Gbps). You have to find on the shelf two SFP (Gbic) connector plugged on the IN port of the two ESH4 controller. After all in the center of the shelf you have a selector that permit you to switch the backend speed from 1 to 4 Gbps (if limits to 2 you have an EXN2000). For the second EXN4000 depends on what you want. You can add to the first using the short 50 cm infiniband cable (out to in schema) or you can add to the second controller using 0b ports on boths. You then have to plug an LC/LC fiber patch from the 0a HBA ports on the N3600 on both heads (A20 stands for active/active). And proceed with instructions... Pardon the IBM-terminology -- I have an N3600 A20 (ONTAP 7.3.1) and have acquired two EXN4000's to expand our storage capacity. The N3600 A20 is currently configured as Active/Active with the existing set of 20 SAS disks. I'm reading through the documentation on NOW[1] on hot-adding shelves and am running into a few questions: - Is the EXN4000 the same as the DiskShelf14mk4? - How do I know if I have ESH2/ESH4 modules or LRC or ESH modules? Also, the NOW documentation[1] refers to the Data ONTAP 7.3 Active/Active Configuration guide for hot-adding of shelves since we are using an Active/Active setup. We tried the flexshare route and it had an impact but only slight. I suspect it's because there is still delay for other requests when this group has filled NVRAM and all that has to flush to disk before it can service the comparatively miniscule "other stuff". And once that slight interrupt has happened the process repeats. But that's only a suspicion. In any case, we're fast coming to the conclusion that this particular group just needs to be isolated, they do not play well with others. So we'll review the tool's characteristics and determine if high end is needed or if mid-range is ok once isolated. As for a BOGF (Bolt-On-Go-FasterTM) Avere is a front runner for write/read acceleration, which is also a possibility for us with this particular group. Thanks. A somewhat debatable performance boost would be to remove the clustering and interconnect, making your entire NVRAM card available for writes, instead of taking up half of the NVRAM card for the cluster partner (of course, going from cluster to a stand-alone system will seriously impact your uptime and fault tolerance. Make sure you know what you do). Doing a headswap for a system with more nvram will also be beneficial (but not exactly low cost or easy to implement). Thanks all for answers. They're quite what I was thinking about "physics" :) Also if I could use "fail/unfail" the raid group I operate is always the same...so that I could remove a disk from it but this last want back a disk :) And all this stuff for the customer is worried about the overall performances. He's got now three rg, the first with 20, the second with 26 and the last with 6 disks and he's concerned about performances gave by the smaller rg influencing all the aggregate... He wanted to extend the two raid group of his aggregate but once increased the raid group size he forgot to use the syntax: >aggr add -d x.y -g raidgroup name So the last raid group has been extended and another raid group has been created with only 5 disks... He asked me how to go back and my answer is: "Copy the data, destroy the aggr and recreate it..." :) But I remember that times ago a customer of mine used the "disk fail" command just to try it and (not sure on syntax) he was able to "unfail" the disk. I would be very interested to hear from Netapp contributors if NDMP backups of volume snapmirror's has changed. My education at the time was that volume level snapmirror's are RO for all blocks, which means inode pointers could not change since that meant a change to blocks *in* the volume. QSM/Snapvault has never suffered from this issue. I am snapmirroring several volumes to a DR site, and I would like to do tape backups at that site. How should I do them? Can I use NDMP? It seems like I can't do straight NDMP because the replicated target is read-only. I am currently creating flexclones from snapshots existing in the volume (nightly.0...) but flexclone then locks this snapshot and snapmirror will fail to update ( I'm not sure if this happens at the next update or when the source system attempts to remove that snapshot and copy it over... I wasn't watching). What do you generally do to get snapmirrored volume data to tape? TIA, Fred

Moving netapp hardware to different racks

Greetings Toasters, Please bear with me, I'm not an electrician. We are constructing a new data center and we are standardizing our racks and the power feeding them. We plan to move some netapp hardware to the new data center, which is currently installed in netapp cabinets where each cabinet is powered by 4 240V 30 amp circuits. The racks in the new data center will be powered by 6 120V 20 amp circuits each. That is less power than we have in our netapp cabinets, but we can simply put less equipment in the new racks if necessary. I am pretty sure that this will not cause us any problems. We already have several FAS2050 controller pairs and DS14MK2 disk shelves installed in non-netapp racks plugged into 120V outlets. Can FAS6040 and FAS3170 heads be plugged into 120V ? (I will double check the hardware specs.) We could move the netapp cabinets to the new data center, but then we need to reserve floor space for the cabinets and run 240V circuits to them. FAS2050 adding 2 x DS14mk2 (ESH2) shelves

Hi all, We're planning on adding a pair of DS14mk2 ESH2 shelves to a FAS2050 running 7.2.6.1P8 and we're wondering if there are any gotchas we need to worry about? The disks are 300F ones. Neither of the two FC ports (0a & 0b) are currently in use. I think we're all set hardware wise, though we might need to do firmware upgrades. I know I'll need to assign the disks to the system once it boots up with them attached, and such like that.
