Has anyone seen an issue where the filer did not update the SNMP settings when set via FilerView? Like changing/modifying the community strings or trap destinations? We're seeing this on two different 7.3.3 boxes, one of which is in production. Please be advised that this email may contain confidential information. Is anyone running ONTAP 8.x with 64 bit aggrs ?

Hello Toasters, Currently all of our filers are running ONTAP 7.3.x and we are looking at upgrading to 8.x and perhaps buying some disks/shelves that require 8.x. We would also like to convert to 64 bit aggrs to get beyond the 16T size limit. As I understand it, there is no way to upgrade an existing 32 bit aggr to 64 bit in place, you need to copy the data. Furthermore, you cannot volume snapmirror 32 bit to/from 64 bit. I presume you can ndmpcopy 32 bit to/from 64 bit. How about "vol copy" ? Is anyone running 8.x and migrating from 32bit to 64bit aggrs? How are you doing it? Is the recommended 8.x release stable? Any serious bugs, issues, or gotchas ? DFM 4.01 fragmentation on windows 2003 server

I have a vm running windows 2003 with DFM on it monitoring a few filers. Its been running for years, and I have gone from DFM 3.3 on up to 4.x. The question is this. The drive that has the application installed on it is heavily fragmented. All the fragmentation is in the perf data type files. Any thoughts? LUN has run out of space

Hi all, I've a strange issue on a filer deeply used in FC SAN (3160 with DoT 7.3.2P6 -> it will be upgraded but for now is impossible). On a W2K8 server running Exchange 2010 a mailbox store is hosted on a LUN with this characteristics. The LUN has been created with Snapdrive. Volume /vol/excmbs2FAB01Data/ 155GB 100GB 54GB 65% /vol/excmbs2FAB01Data/ /vol/excmbs2FAB01Data/.snapshot 0KB 2110MB 0KB ---% /vol/excmbs2FAB01Data/.snapshot Vol options are Nosnap on Snap reserve/sched 0 Volume reservation "volume" Fractional reserve 0 Autosize on Volume autosize is currently ON for volume 'excmbs2FAB01Data'. The volume is set to grow to a maximum of 240 GB, in increments of 10 GB. What if SnapMirrror Cannot Keep Up

So if a source/destination pair is doing a snapmirror update and the current update is not complete before a new update is requested, what is the behavior? Does it queue the second snapmirror update and just update it when the first completes? I understand the behavior when updates are done by the scheduler on the array itself as per snapmirror.conf. In this case it queues the updates but only to a maximum of three. "If an update is in progress when another is scheduled to occur, SnapMirror starts another transfer as soon as the transfer is complete. However, if three updates pass while the current transfer is in progress, SnapMirror does only one more update; it does not go back and run updates that have been made obsolete by those scheduled later." But I'm not talking updates initiated by the scheduler on the array itself. I'm really asking about something like SME performing a backup and requesting an update. The snapmirror update here is functionally equivalent to issuing a snapmirror update command manually. Suppose the mirror does not complete before the next backup and subsequent update request is made (or snapmirror update command issued manually). What if the rate of data change exceeds the ability of network to complete the mirror or if the WAN link to the DR site is just too darn slow? Do the updates queue on the destination and snapshots build up on the source indefinitely? Or do manual or snapmanager initiated updates follow the "queue to three and then give up" rule above? Hi, Cifs got a problem with nat and more user accounts on one ip. There is a cifs option that you can try. the option is called cifs.client.dup-detection and is set default to ip-address Try name, for detection through netbios or set it to off Cifs client detection is a option to detect duplicate sessions in order to terminate any session that did not terminate when a client system rebooted Hope that helps, greetz Philipp

We've encountered a problem were clients behind a NAT firewall device are having intermittent problems accessing shares on the NetApp vfiler. Clinets that are not behind the NAT firewall device have no problems. We've switched out the OpenBSD NAT device with an F5 BigIP and the problem still exists. Do you know of a limitation of the NetApp to work correctly with hundreds of CIFS clients coming from a single IP address? It's a NetApp FAS3070 running OnTap 7.3.5P1. Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM)

Is anyone using Microsoft DPM with a DR Site built? How do you replicate from site-site and what is the recovery process that you use? I have read TR-3900, but it explains that two DPM servers are required and 1 must be virtual. I was wondering if there is an alternative method or if i can reduce the number of servers to 1 virtual. We are trying to design a solution that integrates with NetApp SnapShot and Snapmirror. Fabric MC. Minimum link speed on ISL

Hi all, is there some doc or some best practice that definitively states the minimum needed bandwidth on the two ISL that are present in a fabric MC? I mean, in case of use of the direct ISL on the two couple of SAN switches I expect to have 4 Gbps on the fibre wires But in case of use of DWDM what is the minimum have I to ask for or to expect? SAN for SAS

Hi, A bit of a generic SAN question (not necessarily NetApp specific). I've got a team of 40 people who use a statistical analysis package (SAS) to crunch massive time-series data sets. They claim their biggest gripe is disk contention - not necessarily one person using the same data but 40. So they process these data-sets locally on high-spec PC's with several disks (one for OS, one for scratch, one for reads and one for writes). I think they'd be much better off utilising shared storage (ie a SAN) in a datacenter so at least the workloads are spread across multiple spindles and they only need to copy or replicate the data within the datacenter rather than schlep it up and down the WAN which is what they currently do to get it to their distributed team PC's. Are there any useful guides or comparisons for best practise in designing HPC environments on shared infrastructure ? Other than knowing what SAS does I'm not sure on its HPC capabilities (ie distributed computing, clustering etc) so I'll need to follow that angle up too. Thanks in advance, Raj.

Iirc (and I'd check since my info may be out of date) SAS 50/50 is only that over the long run; it does a lot of reads (up to entire analysis sets) followed by a lot of writes, with quite a bit of IO to temporary files too. It can be quite a handful to manage on shared storage. You need a good understanding of the app to be able to size it properly. Do I need to update diagnostics firmware?

About to bump my N3600 A20 (FAS 2050C) from Data ONTAP 7.3.1 to 7.3.5.1. Our BIOS and BMC are current at 3.0 and 1.2 respectively, but our diagnostics firmware is at 5.3.6 (the latest is 5.4.6). Couple of questions: - Should I really update the Diagnostics firmware, or do many of you just leave it as-is if you're at the latest BIOS anyways? - Is it possible to update the Diagnostics firmware only (don't reflash the BIOS, etc) and somehow avoid needing to fail-over to my other controller and reboot? Deduplication limit on 2040

Hi all, on FAS2040 with DoT 7 the size limit for a volume with A-SIS enabled is 3 TB. I read that with DoT 8.0.1 this limit has been extended to 16 TB (note, the limit with A-SIS enabled, not the vol size limit!) but nowhere I find that this can be done ONLY if containing aggregate is 64 bit. So, question is: to have a deduplicated volume on a 2040 bigger that 3 TB and up to 16 TB the containing aggregate has to be 64 bit? Thanks, PS) I think so because with 32 bit aggregate you cannot dedup a 16 TB vol (max size of the vol) because in this case no space is left on volume/aggr to dedup.

SAN data migration

Hi all, once upon a time there was "ReplicatorX"...and now? :) Anyway I've never used it and I don't know about its pros and cons. I should plan a SAN data migration from dozens of servers and hundreds of LUNs on HP EVA 5000, IBM DS 4800, EMX CX700 and 300 and so on... ...and all of this has to be performed online, with no disruption, better if agentless (os are Windows, Linux, AIX and more, cluster based on Windows, RHEL, Suse, Oracle...) Moving FC ports to another SAN switch

Hello Toasters, We have a CF pair of fas6040s both connected to two SAN switches. We have migrated most of the clients off this SAN and now we have a need to connect the 6040s to a second (separate) SAN. Currently we have 2 SAN switches on the old SAN. Each 6040 head has two fc ports connected to each switch. So that is 4 fc ports per head or 8 ports total, which is complete overkill for this SAN (we plan to retire the few remaining clients.) I want to take one fc port from each head and move it to the other SAN, without any downtime. Can I do it like this (on each head): fcp config 0x down move the cable to the other switch fcp config 0x up We are using cfmode = single_image by the way. cifs permissions doesnt match what i see in explorer

(last question for a while) in one of my cifs shares (and this applies to all of them) i have defined permissions as (example) domain/group1 Full Access domain/group2 Read Only however when i look at the security tab in windows explorer, it does not reflect as such. security style is the same across all the shares, (ntfs) and when i test the security by having various users access them they get access or denied based on what cifs shares state, not what is shown in explorer. i would like to have the explorer tab match, how can i accomplish this ?

Maybe I should have been more explicit. Each raid group should be comprised of the same size/speed disks, and the number of disks in a raid group should be close to the recommended value for the type of drive and raid type. The only hiccup with building aggregates out of different size drives is when you want to replace the smaller older drives. Growing an aggregate with different sized disks.

Have an aggregate comprised of 300GB disks and have two new shelves with 450GB disks. I ran across this[1] which describes some concerns when dealing with disks of mixed sizes. It sounds like I can't specify that 450GB disks and 300GB disks be assigned to distinct raid groups (my raid size is 16), so if I add the 450GB disks to my aggregate, I'll likely only be able to use 300GB of them. Therefore I should create a new aggregate for the 450GB disks. Is my understanding of this correct? Also, the raid size seems to default to 16 -- I'm used to keeping RAID-6 raid groups to 9 disks at most. Is 16 OK? Varonis and NTP QFS on NetApp

Hi all, for the moment I've few details for this issue has been reported me from a collegue of mine working in another site. For what I can tell you now software is running on a FAS 3170C with DoT 7.3 It seems that there's an issue running both Varonis and NTP QFS on this system. As probably you know both product, NTP and Varonis, use separated NetApp "file policies" (fpolicy) that can interact with the external engine of reporter or that can act as source of control. Now it seems that under certain circumstances these two different but concurrent NetApp file policies cannot simultaneously run and the one or the other or both crash. I would for now know if you are aware of issues on running on the same NetApp system both products or if there are some particular workaround that can be applied. Thank you in advance, Regards

latency measurement in DFM/Management Console/etc

How does the Netapp or DFM measure volume and lun latency? Does it just measure how long it's taking to service requests from the back ports to the front ports? Or does it measure some sort of fibre ping to the host? I am looking in the management console in DFM/Ops Mgr and seeing spikes of very high volume and lun latency (seconds...) on an N-Series IBM gateway filer. I've looked at all the usual suspects, including misaligned VMs, high correlated IOPs, delays on the backend disk, deferred consistency points. Nothing is matching up. Most of the connected systems are on a Cisco UCS with NPIV. The systems with the lowest IOs have the highest latency numbers. Thoughts? TIA, Fred
