Trouble booting an F740

An F740 that has been powered off for over a year has some data I would like to recover. The system boots, but complains about low nvram batteries, and halts. Is there a way I can bypass this shutdown to copy some things off? Fri Sep 9 16:30:53 EDT [mgr.boot.reason_ok:notice]: System rebooted after an internal halt. If you reboot the system it will run for another 0 hours before shutting down. (The 0 hour timeout may be increased by altering the "raid.timeout" value using the "options" command.) VSS providers and EMC NetWorker

EMC NetWorker as of 7.6.2 does not support hardware VSS providers for backup, but also has no facilities for selecting from multiple installed providers. Oh mighty toasters list, is anyone here using NetWorker for tape and also any of the SnapManager tools for any of the Microsoft applications, and if so, how do you do it and stay supported? I know its not related, but by looking at the url, external folks wouldn't know that. Backup to tape when using SME

We are using SnapManager for Exchange to take snapshot/snapmirror type backups of our Exchange databases, which are stored on iSCSI LUNs on NetApp. We use NetApp's Single Mailbox Restore product to do restores. This works well, but we would like to migrate the backup data to tape in a way which makes restores (relatively) straightforward, so that we can increase our retention period. Our tape backup/archive solution is TSM. Can anyone on this list suggest methods to achieve this? We are considering the TSM Exchange agent, but it seems to duplicate rather than leverage the functionality of SME. OnTAP version is 7.3.5. We don't have SnapVault licensed. If I didn't genuinely need this list to do my job I'd have dropped you whiners a month ago. I am one of the troubled many who have been receiving the toaster list emails for some time now but have been unable to post due to quirks of the ancient "majordomo" list previously graciously hosted at mathworks.com. I have benefited hugely from the information I've seen on this list, and when I've needed to I've had a co-worker (who could post) forward my questions to the list. In most cases I've found this list to be a better troubleshooting tool than NetApp's premium support. So I was delighted to see the list updated so that I'd be able to post, regardless of the letters following the "@" in the email address. I was grateful to see that someone had stepped up to solve the problem instead of whining about it. I'd often thought maybe it was time for someone else to take a turn at hosting the list but like the rest of us I somehow never quite got around to volunteering. inconsistent disk-list-info

when using the disk-list-info API command, we sometimes get inconsistent info - some disks missing from the list. Seems to happen more on systems with more disks. (e.g. happens semi-regularly on a system running 8.0.2 7-Mode with 60 odd disks; doesn't happen on systems with less disks.) Found one reference to this before: http://communities.netapp.com/thread/1959 It's inconsistent enough that it's a pain to troubleshoot, so wondered if anyone had any solutions already: - is this a known issue? resolved in any OnTap version? - ways to avoid it? (does limiting the attributes returned in the result set help?) -does using perf-object-instance-list-info disk to get the disks, then looping through them via disk-list-info avoid the issue? upgrade to 8.0.2

We are currently running 7.2.6.1P9 on our 3160, and I want to upgrade to 7.3.3 or later. Any reason not to go all the way to 8.0.2? My hardware is all supported (finally got rid of those old disk shelves). And if we're upgrading, do you usually upgrade disk and shelf FW as well? Is this a requirement? I seem to be one version behind on most of my FW right now. FC attached tape drive to a 3210

Hi, I'm trying to setup a FC attached tape drive to the onboard FC ports (0c and 0d) of a FAS3210 >From my understanding I need to change the FC port to an Initiator, however this requires a reboot. FILER1> fcadmin config -t initiator 0d Thu Sep 1 11:54:21 GMT [fci.config.state:info]: Fibre channel target adapter 0d is in the PENDING (initiator) state. A reboot is required for the new adapter configuration to take effect. Does anyone know if there is a way round having to reboot the filer ? The one shown above is the first line in the list when the command is complete. So it's not simply truncating the total output, it has managed to drop a portion of the output of one command. If it were a network or SSH problem, I wouldn't expect a gap in the middle of a command, nor would I expect it exactly on a nice line boundary. Looks like I can open a ticket now. -- Darren

I've registered "toasters-list.org" tell me who to transfer ownership to and we can just setup dns to point to the existing server. • thank you to whomever is now hosting, I haven't been paying much attention to the discussion because of other things, but it's appreciated. • I'm happy to pay the first year, but if someone @ netapp could make sure that this gets paid for going forward, that would be appreciated. I don't want to transfer someone a domain name that comes with monitory obligation. Download the latest version of the ESX Host Utility Kit and use the mbralign utility that's included with it. It can be run from either the VMware hosts themselves or from a Linux/Unix server with mount access. If you take a NetApp snapshot of the datastore then you can run the mbralign scan against the snapshotted -flat.vmdk(s) without having to power off the virtual machines. Also, some VMware align/misalignment statistics are included in the output of nfsstat -d in version 7.3.5.1 or later. I may be slightly off on the OnTap release version... I originally tried posting this back on April 11 - now that the list is "fixed" I want to try again - thanks: Hi, we¹ve aligned all our Vmware vmdk¹s according to the Netapp best practices while tracking the pw.over_limit counter see: http://www.vmadmin.info/2010/07/quantifying-vmdk-misalignment.html Counters that indicate improper alignment ( ref: ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/storage/isv/NS3593-0.pdf) ³There are various ways of determining if you do not have proper alignment. Using perfstat counters, under the wafl_susp section, ³wp.partial_writes³, ³pw.over_limit³, and ³pw.async_read,³ are indicators of improper alignment. The ³wp.partial write³ is the block counter of unaligned I/O. If more than a small number of partial writes happen, then IBM® System StorageTM N series with WAFL® (write anywhere file layout) will launch a background read. These are counted in ³pw.async_read³; ³pw.over_limit³ is the block counter of the writes waiting on disk reads.² -- So the pw.over_limit counter is still recording an 5 minute average of 14 with 7-10 peaks in the 50-100 range at certain times of the day. If I look at the clients talking to the Netapp those times its mostly Oracle RAC servers with storage for data and voting disks on NFS. This leads me to the question: What if any are the other possible sources for unaligned IO on Netapp? All references I find are vmware vmdk but are there others like Oracle which may be doing block IO over NFS? out of order/random delivery

Anyone else get messages from this mailing-list out of order? I find that I often see replies to a message and then get the original message hours later. The timestamps on the messages are correct, but they get to my inbox in a strange order? For the record, it happened when the list was hosted at Mathworks as well. I guess it just seems more pronounced here with the recent volume of messages. -Kyle

while doing a cp, I see the following: cp: skipping file `/a/b/c/d/e/file', as it was replaced while being copied. The file has a date of Sep 11, 2010, the ctime is May 19th, 13:53. The atime should not matter. (which is today). Mixed San question

Hello toasters I'm trying to implement fas2040 in a new mixed fabric environment I have few IBM blade centers each contain 2 cisco mds 9100 switch All the blade centers mds switches connected to brocade 300 switch The brocade is configured with interopmod 3 The brocade is the principal switch with domain ID 100 while the other mds are connected with E-port downstream with domain ID from 90 to 110 without 100 I have two issue 1. I cannot create aliases / zones in the brocade the button is grated out and say this is disable in mcdata open fabric interopabilty Mode I can live with this issue and configure everything with cisco tools But even then alias or zones are not shown on the brocade even tough they work 2. The real issue is when I configure one blade server on each cage (one port on each mds ) everything is work fine but the minute I try to add a second blade server on the same switch the first blade disconnect from it's group and in "fcp show initiator" I can no longer see the first server wwn until I disconnect the second server Any ideas ? snapmirroring Exchange

Is it possible for a snapmirror update command (one not mediated by SnapDrive) to temporarily halt I/O on the source disk? More to the point, is it possible for a snapmirror update command to harm the source server if that server is an active Exchange 2003 box? We do own SnapDrive for Exchange, but installing it is not an option at this time. This snapmirror solution is being suggested as an emergency solution to replicate our Exchange database for the next few days, while our operations team tries to figure out why DoubleTake has failed for four days in a row. They understand that without SnapDrive's VSS goodness there is a good chance of data loss on the target end, but they'd like to give this a shot on the theory that it's better than nothing.
