Regarding out-of-sequence messages: yes, I'm aware that messages are arriving out-of-sequence again. This is caused by people posting from addresses other than those by which they are subscribed. In what I think is fairly standard anti-spam behaviour for 21st Century mailing lists, this one holds (for moderation) posts from apparently-unsubscribed users. For fastest, and therefore sequential, throughput, *please post from the address at which you have subscribed*. Regarding unsubscriptions: the list engine doesn't deal well with "unsubscribe" requests sent (a) to the full list (b) from an address at which you're not subscribed; I'm not convinced this is the engine's fault. If you want to unsubscribe, there is automated assistance in the headers of every single list message, which most decent mailers will present to you. Every subscriber also gets a reminder on the first of every month that outlines several other methods for unsubscribing, and in the limiting case, you can ask me. Regarding the old archives: I'm still working on it. Is there a graph somewhere of performance vs raid group size?

We're a relatively small shop just getting started with NetApp (1 2020 and 2 2040's all active/active, plus 3 4342's for the 2040's ). Since committing a disk to a raid group via an aggregate is essentially a permanent thing (you can't change your mind and later shrink an aggregate to pull out a disk from a raid group to use with another node), we'd prefer not to put all our (80) disks in aggregates just yet. We might want more in some nodes and less in other nodes as future needs come into clearer focus. In addition, it's clear that we can later easily add in any disks we've held back as needed and use the reallocate command with the -f option to re-optimize the layout to accommodate the added disks efficiently. So it seems a bit short-sighted to configure all 80 of our disks into aggregates among our 6 nodes right from the get-go (minus the requisite hot spares, of course), as our vendor would have us do. But in deciding how small to start out with, we don't want to cripple our performance too much. I've looked long and hard on the net to find some data, any data, on DOT 7.x performance vs raid group size, but have come up empty. I understand that performance should be awful and unacceptable if you have a raid group of size 3. I also understand from anecdotal evidence that performance improvements from higher raid group sizes are apparently are not significant once you get to a raid group size of 16 or so. But what about in between? How does a graph of performance vs raid size look from 3 to, say, 20? Just ballpark data on any type of remotely typical workload would help a lot to start with. Has anyone ever seen or tried to compile this kind of data? Using iometer, perhaps, or any other benchmarking tool? RAID-DP data is preferable, but I'd take RAID-4 data if that's all I can get. Greetings, I've starting playing around with the 8.1 RC1 release. I want to upgrade some aggregates from 32 bit to 64 bit. From what I can tell, the only way to do this is to add additional disks to an existing aggregate. Is that correct? I've got one filer with limited disks and don't want to add 1 additional disk to a raid group. I don't want to do all the associated reallocates to smooth out the data allocation. TOE fun?

Hi all, I recently upgraded a V3140 to 8.0.2P1, and all went well apparently. I'n now seeing strange NFS/CIFS behaviour, where a client will make a connection succesfully, but when the client requests a read, the filer FIN ACK's instantly, for no reason I can work out. Got a call open with netapp, but they seem a little fazed by it as well. Anyone seen something similar and can point me? It does seem like it's a TOE problem, but I have TOE turned off on the NIC's, but am wondering if ONTAP is doing something behind the scenes maybe? head swap in a fas2050a in a nfs only environment

Hi guys, i have 2 fas2050a used only with NFS protocol. I need to reinstall one from scratch and snapmirror the data in it. After that I want to swap (one by one) the heads from the other fas2050a in order to dont change the support contract from this storage. Do you see any issue in performing the head swap ? weird name mapping issues - using LDAP for name services

We are using Active Directroy for LDAP on our Linux clients. I'd like to set up the filer to be able to resolve the usernames both directions but I'm having a couple of issues. Filers are running 7.3.3. I have had this working before at a previous job but I am missing something & the docs are not quite as helpful as I'd like. 1) I can't get LDAP working at all (getXXbyYY is not working even though I see the filer connecting to the DC on the appropriate port but I'm missing something. 2) Not all users have rfc2307 information set, ideally I'd use their samaccountname for both (it always matches). 3) I am in a multiforest environment, I'd like to use Global Catalogs for my lookups instead of normal DC's & do it on the GC port so it can retrieve info for any user on my network. This may not be possible, I am not sure. NIS works fine, if I am not able to get this to work I'm either going to have to script a dump of AD to NIS or use the MS tools to do the same thing and do this with a usermap.cfg. Either possibility is ugly so any suggestions would be appreciated. Migrate Solaris FC LUN to Linux iSCSI ?

Hi toasters, Is it possible to take a Solaris FC LUN and attach it to Linux via iSCSI? I suspect problems since the "lun create" command needs to know the OS type (solaris in this case). I don't think FC to iSCSI is a problem, though. Naturally we would love to "just move" the LUNs without creating new Linux LUNs and copying the data from Solaris to Linux. In case you are wondering about the FS on the LUNs, this is disk cache for a StorNext filesystem and we want to replace our very old Solaris hardware with Linux "in place". Otherwise it would take literally months to migrate the data since StorNext is a tape backed hierarchical FS. If we can't do this hardware upgrade in place, then we will soldier on on the old Solaris hardware and cross our fingers. We intend to replace StorNext eventually but want to get off the old Solaris hardware in the interim if possible. Snapvault advice

Hello all, We are planing a snapvault backup of data from a snapmirror destination. Most of the volumes that are to be snapvaulted are luns in qtrees. The rest are nas data. I was looking at different ways to do this and came up with the following conclusion for block data: 1. Run a snapvault update on the _recent copy. Schedule a snapvault snap sched on the secondary after the update. This require a bit of scripting and schedules. 2. The best practises guide recommends using the SnapManager product for sv backups. Since this too require a level of scripting; I am not sure what difference it would make. Also this requires rsh access to the filers which we do not permit. As for the NAS volumes; the snapmirror source will need to be setup with a snavault snap sched schedule (something that happens before a snapmirror transfer). This snapshot will then be snapmirrored to the SM destination. The SV secondary snapvault schedule will have a snapvault -x schedule that happens after the SM transfers complete. The other option would be to follow the same pattern as option 1 used for block data. Just wondering if any of you have faced this issue and what was done in your environment? Cleaning up snapshots while leaving flexclones

Hi, We routinely cleanup snapshots via filerview and recently started using flexclones, which show up in the snapshot view as ³busy,vclone Busy² For this volume there are similarly named snapshots listed as ³normal² We¹d like to delete those to reclaim the space, but want confirmation they are not going to affect the mounted vclone(flexclone) volumes. Hello, Is it possible/allowed to use a license on a filer other that the one to which the license is associated in NOW? Let's say I have a FAS2020 with a snapmirror license and I have no use for the license on this particular system, can I use this license on another FAS2020? Linux Mutipath to NetApp LUN via FCP

Hi Everyone. This question is probably more Linux than Netapp, but I figured people on this list have done this. I am setting up DM-Multipath with a lun from a FAS via FCP. I have the NetApp linux host utilities installed on the host. I have a LUN that has 2 paths (one lun, 2 HA FAS controllers). Without Multipath running, I see them as /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc: # fdisk -l Disk /dev/sdb: 322.1 GB, 322163441664 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 39167 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 1 39167 314608896 83 Linux Disk /dev/sdc: 322.1 GB, 322163441664 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 39167 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdc1 1 39167 314608896 83 Linux This is correct. I can mount each of these one at a time from the host and see the LUN correctly. After I start up Multipath, I have the same 2 devices above (sdb and sdc) but TWO new devices: Disk /dev/dm-0: 322.1 GB, 322163441664 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 39167 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/dm-0p1 1 39167 314608896 83 Linux Disk /dev/dm-1: 322.1 GB, 322159509504 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 39166 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk /dev/dm-1 doesn't contain a valid partition table My question is why do I have both /dev/dm-0 AND /dev/dm-1 ? Also -- above shows dm-1 as not having a valid partition table, However, when I try to mount /dev/dm-0 it fails (says its busy), but I can mount /dev/dm-1 and see the LUN just fine. So I'm looking for some basic guidance with multipath. From what I've read, I should just see one /dev/dm-* and I should be able to mount it, and it should have a valid partition table on it. Hi Im setting a new Oracle Database solution to replace a old Oracle RAC on EVA8400. After reading Oracle Databases on VMware vSphere 4 - Essential Deployment Tips i got a few question still needs answered. Our new storage is a FAS 3240 7-Mode We have a SATA and SAS aggregate and 1TB Flash cache available. SAS 1 Raid Group (16 disks) SATA 4 Raid Group (56 disks) Whats the recommendations for Datastores and VMDK's? >From i can gather i need to create a volume dedicated to Oracle and present(NFS) it as Datastore for Oracle only. And create VMDK's like this: VMDK-1 OS from another Datastore Oracle Datastore VMDK-2 Oracle Binaries VMDK-3 Oracle data VMDK-4 Oracle Redo VMDK-5 Oracle Archivelogs I have 5 databases so 5 VM's where i create a volume with Datastore for each? SMO dumping java hprof files

Hello, We recently noticed that our / partition on one of our oracle RAC servers was filling up. While investigating I noticed that snap manager for oracle seems to be dumping files under /opt/Netapp/smo named java_pidXXXX.hprof. These files are all around 90 meg. It appears that this has something to do with java being run with the "-XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError". I'm very new to this environment but from what I'm being told, there is no issues with SMO, it's functioning correctly and as it always has. I am a little concerned though that these dumps are being generated due to an out of memory error. Someone did mention that they thought during the initial setup they may have turned on debug logging but they aren't positive and they don't remember how it was turned it on. Changing snapmirror destination to a new filer

Hi, We currently 3 filers, and are looking to move a snap mirrored volume to another filer, we would like to do this without having to recreate a new snapmirror and all the traffic associated with with it. The example is: Filer1 has Vol1 witch is snap mirrored to drfiler1 Vol1 We would like to copy/move Vol1 on drfiler1 to drfiler2, and continue with it being a snap mirror of Vol1 on Filer1, without having to reinitialise the snap mirror Drfiler1 and Drfiler2 are both on the same site so we have no bandwidth restrictions. Is this possible and could someone point me in the right direction of how to do it. EMC Networker, NetApp CIFS shares

Hi all, We're starting to provide CIFS service out of a FAS2040, and we want to establish conventional backups with our existing EMC Networker setup, or our other NetBackup setup. If we use NDMP, is the folder/permissions data in the CIFS volume sucked across, with valid integrity, in the NDMP backups? Our Networker servers are based on Linux. Can Networker attach to the CIFS share directly, and haul across the backups? (Maintaining share/security data per above.) Otherwise, does the Networker/Windows client back up mount points? If you are concerned about ease of mgmt I would go with NFS ass Jeff recommended, its as easy as VMDK files with out the overhead and additional points of failure (well, assuming IP storage at all). 1. Be aware that Oracle's official position is that they do not support Oracle in a virtualized environment beyond the operating system. If there is a problem and you need Oracle's support, they may very well tell you to put it on a physical server before they will support you. 2. Whether you use VMDK's, NFS, or LUNs is going to depend a lot on which OS Oracle is running on and how you plan to protect the data. Also, which version of Oracle you are running. For instance if you are running Oracle 10g in a Windows environment then NFS is out of the question. If running 11g in the same environment, then one could use Direct NFS with Oracle. In a Windows environment Snapdrive for Windows 6.3 has no issue with taking snapshots of LUNs or NFS volumes, prior versions could not deal with NFS so you had to use LUNs if you wanted to use Snapdrive for Windows to handle taking snapshots of your databases. Theoretical mixing of disks

Hi all, I know the DS2246 supports both SSDs and SAS drives, and I know this is not recommended, but for the purposes of answering a hypothetical question posed to me, is it technically possible to mix ssds and sas drives in the same shelf? Thanks in advance, Nick

Flash Cache statistics question: Invalidate vs Evict?

I'm trying to analyze the performance of a Flash Cache (PAMII) module and can't seem to find a detailed definition of the "inval" and "evict" metrics. All the documentation simply states the obvious with the very unhelpful "blocks evicted/invalidated from cache per second". Both eviction and invalidation are removal of blocks from the cache, but what I want to know is why are they removed. Essentially what causes an eviction verses an invalidation? Is a block "evicted" because it was never used and a timer expired? Is a block "invalidated" when the cache is full and a useful block is thrown out to make room for a new block? Hi guys, i have a very old f840 without maintenance. I have the nvram battery broken. So in this case the parameter raid.timeout will stop the filer after the setted hours value. I have dataontap 6.5 There is a way to disable/avoid the filer reboot ? setting the value to 0 stop the filer immediately. There an infinite value to disable the halt ?
