NetApp backup to a Quantum 4700

I am sure this is documented somewhere, but I haven't run across it yet. The NetApp documentation suggests estimating the number of tapes and then specifying the command-line dump command such that tape handling is done correctly for the number of tapes needed. I'd prefer to let the 4700 do it by itself in auto mode. Can I just use a very large -B value and pretend that my stacker is one big tape or are there other tricks? -Rasmus

However, it is not yet fully tested or supported by either Microsoft or NetApp. So, we're not promoting this solution and our sales or support people will not be able to help. At the same time, we are interested in hearing from people who like this solution, and your specific reasons for it. If RAID scrub finds a block it can't read, it reads the corresponding blocks on all the other drives and reconstructs the missing data. Then it re-writes the unreadable block, which remaps the block to a new location. I believe the remapping occurs automatically, because we set an auto-remap flag on the drives, but this may vary from drive to drive. If a WRITE fails, then we do drop the whole disk out. This is because, with auto-reremap, a WRITE should never, ever fail. If it does, there's something seriously wrong. A read failure during normal operation is handled as described above with RAID scrubbing. The block is rebuilt and rewritten so that the drive remaps it. We added RAID scrub because single block failures do occur, and they are nasty. If you've got an undetected bad block, and then a different disk fails entirely, then the stripe with the bad block will be impossible to reconstruct, because it has two missing blocks. In this case we zero both blocks and require the user to run WACK to fix whatever damage that causes. That generally works, unless the lost block is really important, but it's much, much better to find and fix the bad block right away, which is what the scrubbing does. It actually took a year or two before we started seeing this problem in our install base. We figure that it just takes a while before a system sits long enough to have files that never get read, and then for a failure to occur in such a file. Dave

A few questions maybe someone could answer: - Why does a NetApp scrub the disk when it is in degraded mode? - What is the chunk size in NetApp RAID (using the term "chunk" to mean the amount of data written on each disk in each stripe)? - Is the WAFL block size still 4k? I seem to remember that it had grown, but all of the online documentation says 4k. Thanks. Dan

just fyi, some mib names can be a bit misleading. for example CpuBusyTimePercent is not an instantaneous value of cpu utilization, but rather the percent time the filer has been doing useful work since the last reboot. read the mib carefully. -ashley

"netapp" - command-line NetApp remote monitoring

This Perl 5 script (I can it "netapp") can be used to remotely monitor a Network Appliance via SNMP. To use it, you need a working version of "snmpwalk" and "snmpget" from the UCD snmp tools distribution in addition to version 1.1 of the NetApp MIB. I might switch it over to using the Perl5 SNMP module eventually. You'll possibly have to change some paths and parsing depending on how different your SNMP tools installation is from ours. I wrote this to allow non-privileged users to get information from the toaster without logging in or running rsh. These are the basic commands supported: partial sysstat -> "netapp -sysstat filer" or "netapp -sysstat=60 filer" df -> "netapp -df filer" df -i -> "netapp -if filer" also -> "netapp -df -if filer" It's pretty intelligent about loading the network too. An earlier version of this script only used snmpwalk, which produces a lot of back-and-forth chatter, even if you walk a very small portion of the SNMP tree. Quad Ethernet Card Support

The Data ONTAP Software Release 4.3R3 field alert and "4.3 Configuration Guild" have left me with the following questions: 1.) Is the quad-port 10/100Base-T card supported on the F330? 2.) If so, can I have three dual-attached FDDI cards active at the same time as the quad-port 10/100Base-T card on the same F330? This is necessary to support our backbone migration from FDDI to ATM. 3.) Is the quad-port 10/100Base-T card supported on the F230? 4.) What support for quad-port 10/100Base-T cards does ONTAP 4.3 provide? Does any previous release support the card? "quota resize" wish

We're running 4.2a on a F630. It would be nice if "quota resize" would work when you add a new entry to the /etc/quotas file when you have a default quota. In other words, if /etc/quotas has a default quota entry and a user has no entry in /etc/quotas, he gets the default quota. The netapp keeps track of his disk consumption and even "quota report" lists the user. But if I add a new entry to /etc/quotas to give this user a new quota, "quota resize" ignores it. I don't think it would be very hard for "quota resize" to work in this case. Would it? I can see a problem if the netapp does not keep track of the disk consumption of users who have no quota. Then adding a new entry to /etc/quotas would require the netapp to compute the user's disk usage on the fly. This would be about as expensive as a complete "quota on". But when you have a default quota, every user has a quota, so this isn't a problem. At the very least, I think "quota resize" should work for every user whose disk consumption is currently limited by a quota, even those with the default quota. Likewise, it would be nice to be able to delete a line from the file and have the user revert to the default quota after a "quota resize". (The latter may already work; I haven't tested it.) auto-mounting CIFS shares at boot time?

Please take pity on a poor Unix hack who has gotten a bunch of NT servers shoved onto his network. I am trying to get these boxes to automatically mount a CIFS share when they boot. So far I have only been able to get the share to come up when I log a user in. When the user logs out the share disappears. Not exactly a good thing when you have a web server service running in the background trying to serve up pages directly from this Netapp cifs share. My kingdom for /etc/vfstab for NT! Any tips would be appreciated. -Rasmus

Guy is right about the dialog box popping up if NT does not already have your password cached. You would need to have already logged in at that point anyway. There are two ways to accomplish what you want (that I know of): 1) If your web server is running as a service, you can typically configure it to log in as a user at bootup time. To do this, open the "Services" control panel and double-click on your web server service. You should then be presented with the capability of logging the service in under a particular account. This will allow the web server access to any resource the corresponding user account has access to. It has been awhile since I have used anything but IIS to do this sort of thing, so I don't remember if it is the only web server capable of using this facility. In fact, so many people had problems with this kind of thing before IIS 3.0, that they added support for mapping virtual directories using particular account names as of IIS 3.0. (Just look in Microsoft Internet Service Manager under WWW properties.) 2) If for some reason you can't (or don't want to) use the above mechanism, you can have NT automatically logon at boot up time. This is a less elegant, but completely effective way of accomplishing what you want. Obviously, there is a security risk in having a machine auto-logon, but if you set the screen saver to be password protected and to pop up in 1 minute, you should be relatively safe. Anyway, to do it, you need to edit the registry: Under the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon, add a value named AutoAdminLogon. It must be of type REG_SZ with the value 1. (Yes, REG_DWORD really would have been better.) Then you need to have values for DefaultDomainName and DefaultUserName, according to where and who you want to log in. Then add another REG_SZ value named DefaultPassword containing the specified user's password. Then logout, and your machine should auto-login as the specified user. Some little tidbits about this technique: - It is obviously unsafe to have a clear text password in the registry, so you should make this user essentially powerless beyond his access to the web resources. - When the time comes that you don't want the machine to auto-login, hold down the shift key, and you will receive the normal bootup sequence. You can do this when you log the user out as well, so that you can log in to do whatever you want as a real user. - As of NT 4 SP something, you can't auto-login as Administrator (this is probably good anyway); it will work once, and then prompt you for the password again. Basically, the AutoAdminLogon variable is changed to 0 when the Administrator auto logs on. b/t/w, #2 is available somewhere on the MS knowledge base, I just don't remember the article off the top of my head. Unaccounted for disk space

I have four filers that are nearing production status, and the hardware and software configurations were frozen this morning. To start everything fresh, I zeroed all the disks and recreated the filesystem on all four filers, untarred the 4.2a distribution, restored the rc, serialnum, hosts and hosts.equiv files, downloaded the boot code to the drives, and rebooted. Once everyone was back online, I noticed there is a discrepancy between 'df' and 'du' outputs. 'df' says 40MB are used on two of the filers, and 4.5MB on the other two. 'du' from the admin host consistently reports about 4MB used. Where is that space on adm1-na2 and adm1-na3 going? Old snapshots (which I've all deleted)?
