vsc 4.0 vm inaccessible

I'm seeing this error "User 'root' denied access - missing required capability: 'cli-route'" (on the console) at the cutover stage of vFiler migration under 8.1 GA The vFiler migrations are successful, but this error is troubling for production vFiler migrations which require zero downtime. DataMotion for Volumes in 8.1?

Hello All, Running 8.1GA on a 3240 and trying to move two vfilers from one aggregate to another (both are 64 bit aggrs). Ultimately I just need to move the root and data volumes for these vfilers. Not finding a wealth of examples on the "vol move" command, not surprising as this is a pretty new feature. http://www.netapp.com/us/communities/tech-ontap/tot-data-motion-1102.html NetApp's blurb says this can be done without interruption, but also talks a lot about when to do the "cutover." They say the cutover can be triggered manually or automatically. But I can't make the "vol move" command do anything but return a usage blurb unless I include a "start" switch. Also, their website claims this can be done nondisruptively. But "vol move start" keeps failing because I have CIFS and/or NFS running. In fact, if I turn them both off it still complains that I have NFS exports configured and that I need to remove them first. Anyone have experience moving volumes from one aggr to another, hopefully live? Randy Rue

Getting a quick "connection refused"

A TCP connection towards an arbitrary high port number (>=1024) on the NetApp seems to return "connection refused" instantly. By contrast, a connection towards a low port number waits for several minutes, then something times out. I imagine this is related to assisting security etc. As part of our transition from our previous non-NetApp fileserver, it would be very useful if we could persuade the NetApp to return a quick "connection refused" on a particular low port number. But we cannot see a way to adjust this behaviour (either for a particular low port or for all low ports). Is this possible? If so, could you point us to the relevant documentation, please? (If it is not possible, we can probably put a workaround in the external application.) -- David Lee

Reallocation and VMware

Hi all, I'd like to pick your collective brains about your experiences with reallocate, specifically when reallocating luns under VMware. For background, we're running ONTAP 8.0.1 on a 3170 that's over three years old. I've been going through measuring reallocation, and most of the volumes are over 3. We have no snapshots, and only a relatively small number of volumes are de-duplicated. All our volumes and luns are thin-provisioned, and no aggregate is more than 76% full (most are ~65%). We regularly have huge latency spikes (worst I've seen so far is 5000000ms, and there are far too many to even track over 50000ms daily), and on one filer head, but not its partner, I regularly see disk utilisation go to 100% or more. I'm hoping reallocate will help here. I have a brief note from a NetApp support person who says "It’s very important that you complete the reallocation in the following order: 1:OS 2:LUN 3: Volume". I have two questions about this: - is it absolutely necessary to defrag the OS before you reallocate the lun? I'm sure I've run reallocate without defraging the OS and still seen performance improvements. I'm also assuming that this is only relevant to Windows VMs, not Linux (in our case, Red Hat/CentOS) ones. - if you only have one lun per volume, do you still need to run reallocate on both the lun and the volume? If only one, which is preferable? All advice appreciated. Thanks, Peta

Mixing SAS/SATA DS4243 in the same stack.

Greetings, I know that I can have a mixed stack of SAS and SATA shelves as long as all the drives in each shelf are the same type. I was wondering if anyone has seen any performance issues with this type of mix or if the preferred practice is to not mix them in a stack? I have some shelves to add and it would be very convenient if I put them all in the same cabinet. I just don't want to slow the SAS down with SATA/BSAS traffic on the same bus. OS behaviors.

Greetings, We upgraded a pair of 6080s and 6040s from 7.3.3P5 to 7.3.5.1P4 at the first of the year. Within 1 hour of the upgrade, our OpenNMS server started getting timeouts for SNMP polling. We had ~130 per head for the 6080s in the next 2 days. We had 0 in the prior 2 months that I checked. We also noticed the average CPU load for each head went from ~40% to close to 60% utilization comparing December to January. Anytime the cluster is in a failover mode, we get quite a few customer complaints due to slowness. While I can't say for certain we did not have this slowness before, none of us remember any complaints when the cluster was failed before. Obviously trying to run 120% utilization on 1 filer instead of 80% will cause this issue :-) The 6040 cluster did not give the polling errors, but it looks like the CPU load is higher on them also. The load is usually low enough to gracefully cover a cluster failover. I've had a case opened since the first of the year and it looks like we are now out of options and ideas with no explanation or resolution. At this point our plan is to roll back to the 7.3.3P5 OS since it seemed to behave better. Since there is no identifiable problem or solution, it makes us unwilling to jump to a newer OS since we have no reason to believe the issue isn't inherited by later revisions. Rolling back to a known good OS seems to make the most sense. We will roll the 6080 cluster back first and see how it works out before we roll the 6040 cluster. My question to the group is whether anyone else has had a similar issue but did jump to a newer OnTap release that fixed the issues? fpolicy and open source tools

I've looked at Likewise for their security auditing via fpolicy and it looks pretty good on paper. Before going down that road, though, is anyone aware of any open source tools that will grab and present the same type of data? (who attempted to read/write/delete/change security on what, when, and if it was successful) I also wonder if anyone knows where the fpolicy data is kept? FAS2020 and DS14MK2 Mis-cabled

Hello Toasters I have a FAS2020 Active/Active system with one DS14MK2-AT shelf attached. This weekend I intend to hot-add an additional DS14MK2-AT shelf. However, I believe the existing loop is cabled incorrectly. I'm hoping someone on this list can give me some pointers to confirm whether the cabling can be corrected without taking the filers offline. I really want to fix the cabling before I attempt to hot-add the new shelf. The current cabling is: CNTRL-A/0a -> AT-FCX-A -> CNTRL-A/0b And CNTRL-B/0a -> AT-FCX-B -> CNTRL-B/0b According to the FAS2020 installation flyer, the end of each loop path should terminate with the opposite controller's 0b port (not the same controller as above). Is it possible/advisable to disconnect the cable from both controllers' 0b port and swap them over to get to the correct setup? So long as I don't lose one of the AT-FCX modules during the switchover it seems like it would be okay. I'm going to open a case with support but I was hoping some of the experts on this list might have some thoughts/recommendations/horror stories you can share? FAS2040 configurations

I'm trying to source a small NetApp for a client, and I'm being told that I can get a FAS2040 with 12*1TB in both single- and dual-controller configs, but if I want 12*2TB it's got to be single. Specifically: "2) FAS2040 Dual Controller with 12 * 2TB SATA disks - The 2TB disks in a FAS2040 are not available in a dual controller configuration" Which seems odd to me. Greetings, I just added some shelves of 3 TB drives to a 3140 running 8.1 RC2. For some reason a lot of them seem to munge the shelf address in "disk show". When I run "storage show disk" they all look fine. Here is a limited output: 3c.03.10 woodcut (151733860) Pool0 YHHN0GGA woodcut (151733860) 3c.SHJ00000000711C.17 woodcut (151733860) Pool0 YHHKNR7A woodcut (151733860) The second entry is adding "SHJ00000000711C" in the middle of the shelf address. I've traced the new string to being the shelf serial number. My 1 and 2 TB shelves still work fine. About 75% of my 3 TB drives are stuffing the serial number in the middle. I've made sure the filer knows about the disks and it has a proper disk qualification package, etc, and the disk and shelf firmware is up to date. I was curious if anyone else had run into this. snapdrive failing to map lun

This process was working as of yesterday. Had an issue on the server and had to reboot and now I'm getting this odd error. This is a linux host running RHEL 5.2. It's connecting to a 3270 running 8.0.2P3. This linux server has a script that connects to 2 luns, each on different filers. Both filers give the same error when running the command below: [root@server bin]# snapdrive snap connect -lun data/disk disk_2012-04-17 -snapname filer:/vol/volume/data/disk:daily-2012-04-17 connecting filer:/vol/volume/data/disk: creating unrestricted volume clone filer:/vol/lun_data ... success mapping new lun(s) ... done discovering new lun(s) ... *failed* Cleaning up ... - LUN filer:/vol/lun_data/disk__2012-04-17 ... deleted - deleting volume clone ... filer:/vol/rootdb_data done 0001-476 Admin error: Unable to discover the device associated with filer:/vol/data/disk_2012-04-17. If multipathing in use, there may be a possible multipathing configuration error. Please verify the configuration and then retry. Multipathing was not previously in use on this server. I tried this with and without multipathd running. Anyone know what might be causing this?

Problems with OC5's database

Hi, Ever since upgrading from OpsMan to OC5, I've had nothing but problems with it, or its database to be specific. I recently spent 4 months working with NetApp support on one issue where the NetApp agents were causing OC5 to run out of interprocess communication semaphores thus preventing the web ui from communicating with the database. This was "solved" by removing the name of the OC5 server from all the agents so they wouldn't bother it anymore. This solved the ipcs issue, but now I still have problems with the database when trying to run and DFM-related commands from a cli. The error I always get is: Error: The DataFabric Manager server database is temporarily unavailable; error code is -103 Error: Please try again later This can go on for hours, yet the web ui, while horribly slow, is still responsive and monitoring/alerting continues. I can find nothing on the NOW site related to issues like these and am reluctant to open another support case and be told I am the only one who appears to have this problem. After the last case my OC5 installation has been poked and prodded and examined 6 ways from Sunday, and nothing found to be odd or not covered by netapp's best practices. VSC 4 and online alignment - anyone used it in anger?

Hi all, I've been testing the new functionality in VSC 4 around online re-alignment. I've done some tests with a test datastore and test VM under load, all fine. However I have an estate of over 200 datastores. Has anyone run the scan manager across all their datastores at once? Was there any noticeable impact to the VMs? As far as I can tell, I can only schedule the scan to scan everything at once. I know I could manually do batches but I need to run the scans overnight. I've found documentation around the actual online alignment function and warnings to not do too many at once, but nothing about the scan. There also seems to be no way of stopping the scan once it starts, which makes my rollback plan in my CR for this scan a bit empty looking and hard to justify. And a long shot, just out of curiosity, if anyone has any information on what the scan actually does would be interesting too. I can see it takes a VM snapshot for each VM in the datastore, then deletes it, but that's it. I've searched NOW high and low, but documentation on VSC 4 is pretty thin on the ground. Thanks, Peta

You can start with http://support.netapp.com/NOW/download/swchangelog.shtml The link is on the bottom of the Software Download page, "View Software Change Log". However, that list is not very accurate. I think they manage it by hand... I.e. OnCommand System Manager 2.0.1 is not (yet?) posted in the log. Same goes for patch releases, they are never in the log. But it's a start. Operations Manager and vfilers

I've been trying to delete a vfiler from DFM/Operations Manager. This should be simple and I've tried using the DFM command-line for that purpose: dfm vfiler delete <object> The problem I'm running into is that most of the volumes formerly hosted by that vfiler have been migrated to the hosting filer (aka, vfiler0) but they are deleted in DFM along with the vfiler. These are still valid volumes and need to be monitored, so it's kind of problematic. I've tried "re-discovering" the hosting filer after I deleted the vfiler to get the volumes to move to the "right" place and I've also tried waiting for the next monitoring interval for DFM to pick up the "new" volumes, but nothing is working at this point. The only workaround I've discovered is to re-add the destroyed vfiler to get the volumes back and stop monitoring on the vfiler itself. Any ideas on how to get DFM to "Do The Right Thing"? Recovering a RAID 4 aggregate on FAS2020

Hi all, This is in short our present (sad) toaster situation: we had a FAS2020 system with two controllers, a base shelf of 12 SAS 300Gb disks and an external shelf of 14 1TB SATA disks. We had, among others, an agreggate made of 6 SATA disks configured with RAID4 (5 data disks + 1 parity disk) and 1 spare disk available. One week ago, one of the disks failed. The system substituted it by the spare disk and begun to reconstruct the RAID. However 20 hours later and, before finishing RAID reconstruction, another disk failed. Reconstruction should have ended on that period as the system was not loaded at all (10-12 hours should have lasted as I've read), but unfortunately took longer. When the second disk failed, the first controller made a takeover and set the aggregate offline. nfs: cannot create regular file : Premission denied

Hi, I am a Unix administrator, new to Netapp. We have an IBM N6240 running data ontap 8.0.2p3. I created an nfs share on the netapp with rw and root access by an Ubuntu linux (10.4). Interconnect ports on FAS3240 / N6240 (IBM)

We have a FAS3240 (IBM N6240 actually) and are wanting to trunk in a network and give ourselevs a new vif on subnet 192.168.3.0/24 (as an example). However, we see that the interconnect interfaces (c0a/c0b) have an IP in this same range (192.168.3.x). It seems as those these are internal only, and as such I'm guessing if we add a vif for serving data in the same subnet, there won't be any conflicts? Can anyone confirm? Thanks, Ray

Howdy Toasters, I'm looking for docs on how to setup KRB5 and NFS V4, with a MS AD as KDC. I've looked through TR-3580 as well as some of Eisler's blog entries. Is there a canonical reference for this stuff? Most of the material I've found so far is a bit scattered, and several years old. My test filer is a FAS270 running 7.3.6P5. Compression. What's real and what they trumpet

Hi all, since a lot of time but more over during past events NetApp shouts it from the rooftops that "data compression" in 8.x is a reality! Fake. Yet today a PVR is requested to activate the compression on 8.0.x (the most of "8" installations are on this release) and 8.1 is currently in RC...again, 8.1 has several bugs to be fixed in 8.1.1 (when?) that interest 3100 series (lot of systems running on this platform). Me, and most of my collegues, don't trust in compression. Yes, we can test it, we can do some trick but to upgrade a perfectly running system just to compress some data is another play. The issue is that customers attending those events want to compress data and ask us to set up the systems. What's your opinions about this feature? We've experienced several troubles in a production environment. I still consider that compression is not a mature feature how could be, for instance, deduplication or all the techniques to implement the so named storage efficiency. Regards Dott. Do I need a flexclone license?

Hi all, I ask this to field for I'm receiving not always clear answers. The environment is this: Oracle RAC and ASM with backups managed by SMO in SAN FC storage. If I would mount a snap to have a rewritable image do I need the FlexClone license too? If I would clone a snap do I need FlexClone? Regards

fpolicy overhead

Does anyone know what the overhead of fpolicy translates into? Specifically I'm looking at NTP QFS for external quota management (no file blocking). Right now I can't test under load, just functional (minimal lab environment) but I'd like some idea of overhead before going too far down the path. For instance, if having fpolicy enabled for such a function will add 20%, I may as well stop now. But if it's 2% then everything's rosy. As an aside, I'm also looking at the security audit and reporting product from Likewise, now EMC-Isilon. It also uses fpolicy and cifs auditing. V-series / WAFL performance / 20% free

Hi folks, I'm familiar with the NetApp recommendation to keep ~20% free on all volumes ... this allows WAFL to maximize its performance (convert random IO to streaming IO ... i.e. the 'Write Anywhere ...' part of WAFL). But I'm skeptical that this recommendation applies to V-Series installations, i.e. situations in which the backend array was built by someone other than NetApp. Seems to me that with V-Series, WAFL may find what it thinks are 128K of contiguous blocks on storage and perform the WRITE ... but ... since the backend array has virtualized the blocks in some fashion, opaque to ONTAP, there is no knowing what really happens. In other words, the blocks which ONTAP specifies do /not/ map to physical blocks ... once the WRITE arrives at the array, the backend will do whatever it thinks best with them, perhaps perform a streaming write to contiguous blocks, perhaps not. Implementation-specific. -In fact, with a V-Series, I would imagine (I have a rich imagination) that ONTAP doesn't bother to even try to convert random IO into streaming IO -- I would imagine that it just hands the blocks to the backend in a jumble and says "Do whatever". So, I would like to claim that with V-Series, I can fill up my volumes without impacting write performance ... or, more precisely, that impact is dependent on the characteristics of the backend ... perhaps the backend needs free space in order to optimize its write performance, perhaps it does not. [In our particular case, we're using 3Par, and 'fullness' would not impact performance.] Would anyone see holes in my thinking? --sk Stuart Kendrick FHCRC
