Hi all, Is it trivial to switch between cluster mode and 7 mode? I understand that the data on the array will be wiped, but are there other caveats to be aware of? Are there any licensing or cost issues to be aware of? Does anyone know what additional hardware is included in the FAS 2240 Cluster mode configuration? I understand there is a switch, potentially multiple switches included in cluster mode configurations. Thanks Blake. What I like to use the old script for was displaying the list of hosts connected to the filer, especially when I have done data migrations and the admins look to me to tell them which of their hosts are connected. Latency reporting

Hi all, I'm a bit new to OnCommand and its many variants so I'm after some advice. I need to start generating regular latency reports for management. I have an idea on what to do, but as dfm has changed so much but I'd like to pick the collective toaster brain. - What do you think is the best level to report on? Lun/volume/aggregate/controller/entire filer? - What's the best means of generating these reports? I don't have Insight Balance, just basic OnCommand manager/perfadvisor/console/dfm/probably100othersIdon'tknowof Thanks, Peta

find files owned by a particular user? (quota trouble)

Hello All, I have an IT user who's getting quota alerts despite only having a fraction of the default quota in his actual home folder. If I run quota report on his home drive this reports correctly. However, as he was previously a Desktop Tech for another division (they have their home drives on another volume of the same vfiler), a quota report for that volume shows him as right at the limit. I'm pretty sure there are files somewhere on that other division's home volume that he is the owner of. How can I find those files? Preferably without flipping the archive bit and needing a full backup of the whole volume? Hope to hear from you, Randy Rue

translate disk info?

Hi all, I'm trying to translate the disk identity given by the stats show command, into a system ID, and having some difficulty. The command I'm using is:- stats show disk:*:disk_busy which produces info like this:- disk:4C33D0CF:CC7E4D5B:0B46C331:A990D3B1:00000000:00000000:00000000:00000000:00000000:00000000:disk_busy:53% And I'd like to translate it into a 1b.24 or similar if possible. I performed an ndmpcopy of a filesystem to move it off of a set of DS14 Mk1 shelves (72 GB FC drives, which are now end of support) to a newer set of DS14Mk4 shelves containing 300 GB FC drives. The problem is that after ndmpcopy has finished, the source and destination volume sizes are different: filer*> df -k old_vol Filesystem total used avail capacity Mounted on /vol/old_vol/ 547880960KB 401694484KB 146186476KB 73% /vol/old_vol/ filer*> df -k new_vol Filesystem total used avail capacity Mounted on /vol/new_vol/ 547880960KB 401639832KB 146241128KB 73% /vol/new_vol/ So we're looking at ~50 MB of difference between the two. After doing filesystem checks on both, I found that both contain the same number of files, all of which are equivalent in size. The directory structures are also equivalent, with one exception: one directory is 12KB on the source and 4KB on the destination. Another anomaly is that a 'df' of the filesystems on Solaris 10 show a difference of 16 files between the source and destination. /usr/SAG/db-backup (filer:/vol/new_vol/db-backup):292482200 blocks 19023148 files /mnt/old_vol (filer:/vol/old_vol/db-backup):292372920 blocks 19023132 files So, I know that ndmpcopy is a logical (not physical) copy of the volume, but how is that accounting for more files with fewer blocks? Is it an artifact of fragmentation and metadata changes in WAFL when the data is dumped? I don't have a good explanation for my customer, so I'm hoping someone here will have a quick and easy answer. Hi All, We're currently in the specification phase of a project using a FAS2240 with 4x 10gbE ports. I'm trying to figure out if the FAS2240 supports "active" twinax from a Brocade VDX 6720. The Brocade ethernet switches seem to be relatively strange that twinax at <5M is active, usually it is only long twinax runs that require that. Anyone out there have a FAS2240 working with a Brocade switch via twinax?

OSSV being abusive of the secondary filer.

Greetings, I'm running OSSV3.0 on some RH5.4 clients to a 6040 NearStore running 8.1 with 10G networking. The process works OK, but when I have an OSSV transfer running, the system load on the filer goes to 100%, it starts behaving very sluggishly, and the regular filer to NearStore backups start running very long, in some cases 2-3 days when they should complete in no more than 6 hours. I've gone through the installation and best practices guide and don't see anything about tuning the secondary. I've looked at sysstat during the load times and disk and network throughput are hardly above 60 MB/s. I know I can try throttling the backup, but it doesn't appear to be a throughput or bottleneck issue. Has anyone else seen this or is there anything I can do to help this? $BACKUP_PRODUCT <-> NetApp integration.

Hello all; We are exploring a couple of different ways to integrate our backup product (CommVault FWIW) with our NetApps (N-Series to be exact). CommVault integrates by leveraging FlexClone and SnapRestore. This operates at the volume level and so we either grab the entire volume or nothing at all. No way to get granularity into specific files or folders. Due to licensing constraints, we can't just grab "everything". This may change in the future, but until then we're looking at several options including setting up dedicated flexvols where VM's which need backups are placed and other flexvols where VM's we won't back up are placed. CV also has integration natively with vCenter, but there are some performance downsides here. How do some of you out there handle this sort of scenario? Thanks, Ray

Well, I followed Netapp support's recommendation to add a static route route add 216.240.18.16 <gatewayIP> 1 I post this followup under the category of WORKAROUND since the ASUPs are flowing now, but IMO the root cause is not determined (it should not be necessary to add this static route if the routing table is being obeyed) More info: Our firewall is set to LOG egress (outgoing) connections For the working node I could see the connections made from the default gateway net VIF But, on the problem node, this connection was being attempted from one of the other VIFs (not in the default gateway net) I've asked netapp support to review the fresh ASUPs to see what they might reveal about these apparent routing issues. thanks On Jun 4, 2012, at 11:00 AM, Jayanathan, David wrote: > I am very interested in what you find out. shrinking snap mirror destination volume size does not return space

I'm teaching our storage team to use the System Manager to resize volumes (both source and destination snap mirror volumes) Then one team member noticed this old issue - when the SM src/dest pair volumes are shrunk - the new size is not reflected on the destination - even after a SM update. But is there a better method? Hi all, I've recently attended an official event where people from NetApp in few words said: "DOT 8 7-mode has done its time, it's over, it has been a great os but It's now time to move and push DOT 8 Cluster Mode, everytime, everywhere..." and this also if with a simple two node HA system, including 2220! What do you think about? Also let us assume that cluster mode can (I add 'theoretically') do all what 7 mode does, don't you think that is quite premature to trumpet this out? Regards,

Thanks. I did read up a bit on fcinfo and was considering it for my 2003 servers. I've learned that 2008 includes much of the fcinfo functionality already. I don't know about command-line utilities, but if you're familiar with wmi then you can get everything you need, including the firmware (which was what I was looking for). We're in the middle of a fairly urgent process to review and remediate our servers' compatibility with onTAP 7.3.3p6. We've got everything we need except HBA firmware levels. Does anyone know of a good WMI query we could run against multiple servers that would return the HBA firmware level? Most of the HBAs are HP-OEM'd QMH2462, running under Window 2003 and 2008R2. I'm looking into SANSurfer, but if I can avoid adding new software to my servers then that would be preferred. Thanks. Disk inventory out of sync.

Greetings, We have a 3140 cluster running 7.3.5.1P4 at one of our sites. There were 2 drive failures (not the same raid group), hot spares kicked in, and the hard drives replaced. Everything seems fine to here. The problem comes in because the partner is showing a disk mismatch. It sees all the drives, but the owner of the replacement drives doesn't in some cases. If I do a "disk show" or an "aggr status -r" on the disk owner, it sees the disks. Any of the "storage show disk <option>" commands on the owner do not show the replacement drives. Will a cluster takeover/giveback wake up the filer or are there any other tricks to get everything on the disk owner to show the drives? Firmware Automation

NetApp states this is "unsupported", so I'm posting this here for ideas. For the last 10 years or so we have used a process to automatically download and push disk and shelf firmware to the filers. The process begins with a wget to grab the all.tar file: wget --http-user=userid --http-passwd=password -P /path/to/put/it http://download.netapp.com/download/tools/diskfw/bin/all.gz Now with the recent changes on the support site this year, that method no longer works. I tracked down the new location and tried this: wget --http-user=userid --http-passwd=password -P /path/to/put/it http://support.netapp.com/NOW/download/tools/diskfw/bin/all.gz but it fails, even with a few other flags I tried, the best I could get was a login.html file downloaded. So it's clear that Netapp is redirecting the request for authentication. I looked into wget a further and tried to login, grab the cookies, save them to a file and then use that authentication to grab the file, no luck there either. wget --no-check-certificate --keep-session-cookies --save-cookies cookies.txt --post-data 'user=userid&password=password&postpreservationdata=""' https://login.netapp.com/oamforms/login.html wget --no-check-certificate --load-cookies cookies.txt -P /path/to/put/it http://support.netapp.com/NOW/download/tools/diskfw/bin/all.gz So that's my dilemma. I'm looking for ideas, work arounds, other implementations, anything so I can automate the download of the all.gz and the all_shelf_fw.tar files. >From there my process will continue as before. Host based Lun snapshots (snapdrive) with OnCommand or Protection Manager

Anyone worked out how to do Host based lun snapshots (using snapdrive) with OnCommand or Protection Manager and policies ? It seems utterly amazing you have to write a batch file and call sdcli and then setup a scheduled tasks to take snapshots with snapdrive. We have a lot of luns mapped to hosts and its going to get very messy with all these batch files running. AutoSupport cannot connect to url https://support.netapp.com/

One of the nodes in this cluster is not able to connect to netapp to post its ASUP since we updated to 8.1 GA 40 days ago: AutoSupport (HA Group Notification from na04 (USER_TRIGGERED (COMPLETE:completedShelfFWupdate)) INFO) cannot connect to url https://support.netapp.com/put/AsupPut/ [na04:asup.post.retry:info]: AutoSupport message (HA Group Notification from na04 (PERFORMANCE DATA) INFO) was not posted to NetApp for host (0). The system will retry later to post the message User triggered also fails to post to netapp.support.com (although we receive the emails internally): Jun 4 10:20:03 [na04:asup.post.host:info]: AutoSupport (HA Group Notification from na04 (USER_TRIGGERED (testing)) INFO) cannot connect to url https://support.netapp.com/put/AsupPut I compared options auto output on both nodes and they are the same DNS settings are the same - and functional na04*> ping www.netapp.com a878.b.akamai.net is alive Any other areas to check? thanks

Getting NFS3ERR_ACCES for NFS Share

IBM N6240 running ONTAP 8.0.2P3. Have a number of NFS shares set up with pretty straightforward permissions: /vol/napc2_p2_Data6 -sec=sys,rw,nosuid Filer is connected both to NIS and AD and most shares are shared out via both NFS and CIFS. When attempting to copy file content to the share above (all shares really, but using this one as an example), I get a Permission denied error (packet capture shows this to be an NFS3ERR_ACCES message). The file itself is successfully created, but is size zero. Once the file is created (with error message) I can then run the exact same copy command again and this time the data is populated. Packet capture seems to show the CREATE call succeeding, while the subsequent SETATTR call failing with the aforementioned error. Anyone run into something like this before? NFS client(s) in this case are Linux (RHEL, Fedora). NFSv3 is in use with NFSv4 explicitly disabled. Ray

Install OnCommand Core on Ubuntu?

Hi, Earlier I got a tip on how to install and run DFM on an Ubuntu server instead of RedHat / SuSE (http://www.eigenmagic.com/2009/06/26/how-to-install-netapp-dfm-on-ubuntu/) However, I would like to do the same thing with OnCommand Core, but the former DFM routine doesn't seem to work well at all. So, I wonder if someone else has manage to do the same thing with OnCommand Core and succeeded? Thanks, /P
